Unless, of course, your life is spotless. From what I heard, there has only ever been one perfect human.
Your personal interpretations or your denomination’s dogma may be the eternal Truth, or they may be a little off kilter. You won’t know until you get there and meet the real Judge.
We have an obligation to apply encouragement and guidance to Christians who go astray. When someone is leading a life of sin, and being a bad role model for millions of people, we have an obligation to point that out.
We point that out not just to Phelps in his moment of weakness but also to the multitude who may not know what Christians stand for. Christians, and their Bible, do not stand for fornication. Why are you defending it?
