The book Silent Coup is perhaps the best explanation of who and what was behind the Watergate break-in, and if the authors are correct it all began with John Dean and his callgirl fiance/wife.

G. Gordon Liddy was certainly convinced that Colodny and Gettlin had uncovered the truth, and that with his silence he (Liddy) had been unknowingly protecting Dean rather than Nixon.

I used to really enjoy listening to Liddy on the radio. He & Barry Farber were the two most intelligent commentators around.
