A group of refugees is suing a Central Pennsylvania school district, saying the academy they were put in after their arduous journey to America is not up to snuff.

Represented by the Pennsylvania branch of the American Civil Liberties Union, the six refugees sued Lancaster schools in federal court, saying they were dumped in a disciplinary school and are being denied access to a quality education. The students range in age from 17 to 21, and hail from Somalia, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Burma.

“[The] Plaintiffs are refugees who have fled war, violence, and persecution from their native countries,” reads a statement from the lawsuit. “Having finally escaped their turbulent environment to resettle in America, these young immigrants yearn to learn English and get an education so they can make a life for themselves.”

Send them to Chicago ... it will be just like back home and “top notch union schools” to boot. (May be able to hone those Jihadi skills in the hood).

Sounds to me like the school they were in has a good remedial learning program, teaching English, math, etc, and guiding them to a diploma. You cannot take someone who speaks little to no English and plop them in an advanced geometry or literature class. And if they don’t like being patted down, I suggest they never go to a concert.

How rich, were is the American Civil Liberties Union in support of American children in the failing ghetto school districts?

THIS is exactly why they want to bring these refugees in. More work for lawyers and assorted bureaucracies.

Oh, and more voters in one single generation from now.

Give them a choice.

Pay for a better education or

Go home and fight for your country. Which is what you should have done in the first place.

Courts long ago ruled that the schools have no obligation to provide any particular student with a useful education. They are obliged only to provide warehousing.

Perhaps the “refugees” could return to their home countries and start schools where children are taught to read, write, and add. It’s been done!

So beggars can be choosers?

On the flip side - they're just pointing out deficiencies in the education system that Americans are too complacent to point out.....

The article does offer more information. It appears the administrators wanted the refugees to get English instruction and take the GED.

Eventually the district sent him to Phoenix Academy which may be a charter school that is connected to the k-12 district.

The reason districts want to limit enrollment of foreign students to the main campus is simple. It distorts the district’s achievement numbers on tests, as well as graduation rates, etc., as shown below.

http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/pennsylvania/districts/lancaster-sd/mccaskey-campus-17054

Many districts have student achievement tied to teacher pay and teacher evaluation (teachers will get less pay for poor results on state tests).

Decades ago teachers only had to make plans and grade papers. Today’s teachers are involved in all types of “extras” including “inclusion” (possibly changing catheters) and also lots of data reporting for the federal and state levels.

(in my opinion) The refugees should not be allowed to enter a school until they knew English - same for southern border schools.

However, this does bring to the forefront the problem of school districts pushing underachievers into charter schools to make the district’s achievement numbers better.
