I believe mesmerism was originally practiced by Mesmer passing his hands over the body of a subject in a pattern. It was believed by Mesmer that this pattern was displacing or redirecting magnetic fields, not that the subject was fascinated by the hand movement.

"Mesmerism" is one of the many words in English that comes from a person's name, in this case Franz Mesmer. Chauvinism, the 70s buzzword for alleged sexism, is another example, plus more recent examples of calling someone a quisling, or for that matter referring to receiving oral sex as getting Lewinskyed.

IIRC, Mesmer was the guy who put magnets around his balls claiming it made him more virile and fertile

As anything can be called racism
And leftists slide towards nihilism
We the people
Act like sheeple
In a perpetual state of mesmerism

Last Friday without a football game, if you can believe it.

We’re starting a week earlier this year cause they are allowing schools the option of scheduling a game this week instead of a second scrimmage. Many schools are opting to revive old rivalry games that were impossible before.

We start the era of 6 classes of football, which was vigorously opposed in these parts, yet voted for by the rest of the state.

Socialism! What other “ism”
Could lead to such wide-eyed Mesmerism?
Not one person’s greedy
And no one is needy
Human nature defeated by optimism

Successful examples include The Soviet Union, East Germany, Cuba, Venezuela and, my personal favorite, North Korea.
