(This was taken from Senator Scott's FaceBook feed)
My grandfather left school after 3rd grade to pick cotton. He never learned to read, but he taught us so much about what's really important.
My mom worked 16 hour days as a nurse's assistant to keep food on the table for my brother and me. Her love and sacrifice were immovable forces in our lives. My brother just retired as a Command Sergeant Major after 30 years in the Army. His son, my nephew, has degrees from Georgia Tech and Duke, and is now headed to medical school at Emory.
Our nation certainly faces challenges, but my family shows what is possible in our great nation. We went from cotton to Congress in one lifetime - only in America.

Nice story-——thanks for sharing it.
.
Another case of oppression... oh, wait, never mind.
Couldn’t read by the end of the 3rd grade?
The story needs some work.

In a free country, consciousness creates destiny. One's beliefs and values cause one's choices of one's actions, and if one chooses to think, one chooses his values and what he believes. If one chooses the values of success, rather than low-class values, one has a better chance of succeeding.
And I am sure many people will call him an Uncle Tom.
