My one hope for a melon of any kind bit the dust today. It was a midget cantaloupe. Vine died and it was only a little bigger than a ping pong ball.

Next year, I’ll be planting a couple of pots of these and cukes in a pot and growing vertically. That seemed to work for the cukes this year. The same bugs hit them both in late August, so I’m hoping that they don’t come out in the spring and early summer.

I stay away from all mushrooms not in the super market. I am too ignorant of their culture, etc. to do otherwise.

I’ve got 3 bananas and some ripening tomatoes in a paper grocery bag trying to ripen one green tomatoe that fell off early.

Gonna give it a week and see if it starts to turn - nothing yet after about 48 hours yesterday. I’ll check again.

The ethylene gas coming off the bananas (and maybe the tomatoes?) is supposed to help tomatoes ripen, even green.

I have numbness now on the bottoms of both feet. Doc says it’s lower back related.

Ok. Thanks for that bit of information. Did find the tomatoes. The wind blew them quite a distance from the gardening pots.

I don’t know what happened to my cantelopes this time. They were doing great, healthy vines, loaded with big melons, then almost overnight, the melons turned to mush. I got one good melon from three hills.

I planted five hills of watermelon. There are more than we will be able to eat. I think I’ll send the extras to the produce auction on Friday, along with a couple hundred pounds of pie pumpkins.

I have heard that bananas will hasten it along. I have always just washed the tomato in warm water, let it air dry, and wrapped it in a newspaper or paper napkin and let it ripen. Works 98% of the time.

Numbness would be a welcome relief. I have been doing a search and found a neuropathy clinic in St. Louis that does more than just pain relief.

State that they have detailed diagnosis first to determine true cause of problems, and have new techniques for treatment and improvement of neuropathy and poor circulation. I go to Primary Doc tomorrow.

The first time I mentioned this problem, he just shrugged and said I don’t know what it could be, since you are not diabetic. The next time he said try taking some B12 - all that did was give me weird lab test results - I wasn’t deficient by any means.

My plan tomorrow is to tell him that we have to figure out what is going on with the feet, because it’s not just at bedtime, it’s almost all day and all night.

OK. If they aren’t damaged from the storm. You might be able to wash them off, let dry and wrap them up. Worth a try, unless you like fried green tomatoes.

Our canteloupes start out great, but then the vines just wilt and die practically overnight. Fruit doesn’t even get big enough to turn to mush.

Same with watermelons.

Cukes are only a little better. Zukes and squash produce, but eventually have same problem.

I usually chop up the last of the tomatoes and vacuum seal them. I do squeeze them a bit to get the water and seeds out. I also use them in soups, stews, chili. I got bad frost with just a Ziploc but with the vacuum seal they do great.

I like the vacuum bags best too. I just washed the tomatoes and let them dry then packaged them because I was in a hurry.
