Cachinnate [KAK uh nate]
verb
To cachinnate is to laugh raucously, immoderately, convulsively.
The word comes from cachinnatus, past participle of the Latin verb cachinnare (to laugh loudly).
The adjective to describe such laughter is cachinnatory; the noun is cachinnation.
One might guess that cachinnate and cackle are etymologically related. Not so: cackle is of Middle English origin, cackelen, cognate with Dutch kakelen.
The American naturalist and essayist john Burroughs wrote of someone who "cachinnated till his sides ached."
