The alleged food stamp fraud amounted to less than $4,000 and the burglary involved a vacant apartment with no threats to human life. But when it came time for Erie County Judge David Foley to set bail at a Lovejoy store owners arraignment Tuesday, he looked at the bigger picture.
Its going to take $2 million to get Ahmed Alshami out of jail.
In setting the high amount, Foley noted that Alshami, 37, arrested Friday on four nonviolent felony charges, has 10 previous arrests including two felonies.
The defendant also has a history of not showing up for court appearances or for disciplinary hearings at City Hall regarding his familys operating license for the IGA Community Express Mart, at Ludington and Davey streets. He most recently missed a Council hearing on Aug. 15.
Assistant District Attorney Gary M. Ertel asked the judge to consider Alshami a flight risk and have him held without bail, noting that after the defendant missed a recent appearance in Buffalo City Court, he allegedly said he was too busy to bother coming that day.
He has shown a wanton disregard for the justice system, Ertel argued.

The owner of the Lovejoy, N.Y. Convenience Store, Ahmed Al Shami from Yemen has a similar name to the owner of the M&M First Stop Gas station and convenience store in Courtland, Ms. The owner of that store was reported to be Ali Al Sanai also of Yemen.
Jessica Lane Chambers was burned alive on Dec. 6, 2014. She was last seen alive at the M&M gas station where she purchased gas and spoke with the owner.
On his Facebook page Ali Alsanai the 19 year old owner was seen flashing a fistful of large bills, posing with an AK 15, and also posing with known gang members. I believe he also posted pro Islamic messages.
At the time of the murder the FBI was investigating the gang and drug culture in Memphis Tn., and small towns in the South including Mississippi.
Several months after the murder Ali was not at this store. He had supposedly went to N.Y.
Labor intensive, low skill. Don't need a lot of capital. Can live in the back. Relatives can sit there if needed. Cash business, easy to cheat on tax. As this guy pointed out, easy to scam on EBT. No fear for Muslims from IRS - they'll never investigate a shitty muslim-run convenience store.
This POS and his family need to go over the falls.
Kill them all.
