The situation as I learned: He was the only Negro who owned acreage in an area of 40s era white neighbors and attitudes in the far rural south. A white man on his property could only be there to do him harm. I exited the car immediately and started talking. My wife said later that I sounded just like the man (He said his name was Elmo Yates). While I was explaining our mission his wife came out of the camper trailer that served as their home. She looked like and proved to be a Creek Indian. As we talked he would lower the gun and then he would get excited again and the gun would come up. She quietly told him that I sounded friendly and sure it was I didn't mean no harm. Eventually he decided I was okay and insisted on writing an agreement, or, rather getting me to write it -the fellow was quite illiterate- wherein I apologized for trespassing on his land and he apologized for discomfiting me. Then we signed it- he signed EY- and he told the woman to go get the pork. They presented me with about 3 pounds of freshly smoked pork and we were on our way. I supposed I was scared, I didn't feel scared, just did what I needed to do to defuse the situation. Wife and one daughter were pretty trembly about it. Other daughter was fascinated. A month later I brought some red snapper ashore from a fishing boat as part of my share and put a fileted out 6 pound fish in an ice chest and took it up to Mr. Yates and his wife. He was appreciative and we had a beer before I went back. Eleven years later I read in the papers that one Elmore Yates had been arrested in another county for shooting a man in a bar. The description made it clear that he was the Elmo I knew.
I never had an accent of my own and my accent almost instantly becomes the accent of whomever I am talking with. It causes trouble sometimes as people who don't know me think I am mocking them. Sometimes it can get me out of a serious hole.
You, also, have an ‘absence of fear’. Never mistake that for bravery, but it is a good quality to have.
I am delighted to learn I have it.

Geez Laz, I am glad to hear everything worked out and you are safe. It sucks to be robbed but at least you made it out alive and learned something about yourself. Stay safe.

He got into trouble though.
He reloaded and put six more rounds into the shootee.
Seems the law thought that was a bit excessive.
