You’re right… I was almost rich when I had that built. I do enjoy your photos every week…

Thanks for the pics. Nice looking fence. It has been really great weather here too for several days now. Endive, spinach and ice queen lettuce has started to sprout.

Rain tomorrow, but no freeze for next several days. I’ll bring the lemon tree back in on the one night that it gets down to 40.

When the freeze comes, I’ll mulch the garlic and greens and put a row cover over them. I also left space around the bed so that I could fill soda bottles with water to surround the bed’s perimeter.

That’s why I’m going to try pots and use potting mix next year. My raised beds aren’t deep enough with the good loose soil.

I really like the looks of the cages, and it’s great that they keep the birds out.

The main issue with most gardeners - impatience for Spring. LOL

I haven’t ordered from Burgess since the mid 80’s. They didn’t offer products well suited to our Texas heat even tho tbey claimed so. Back then I was blessed that I’d been able to move from my first home, a mobile, into an old farmhouse on my first real property. It had established peaches, pears and plums. Fast forward 32 years and 3 homes and I’m still bringing over cuttings and seeds from all 3 of those homes to this new place as we have kept the old properties as rental income. I just wish i had the stamina to get our new place fixed up the way it looks in my dreams. Tubebender has been an inspiration to me for years now :)

Re: the maters in flats. Remember 8 or so years ago we had a nationawide tomato shortage one winter? Before that tomato shortage occurred, I had picked several dozen paper grocery sacks of green tomatoes from my plants and an uncle’s garden the day before first freeze. I pickled the little ones, made several dozen pints of chow chow and laid out over 20 cardboard flats under every surface in the house. Husband thought i was nuts. Then the shortage came and we had ripening tomatoes thru that entire shortage.

There was a little cafe in the small town where we lived then. They had a reputation for good food and a good salad bar. The man who’d owned it all my life, a contemporary of my Grama, passed away that winter. His kids were kinda ne’er do well and one daughter-in-law tried to take over the cafe. She did not have a good reputation around town either, was called the “B word” by many. About a dozen or so of my family members would meet at this restaurant about once a month for birthdays. After the owner passed we went for our usual trip, the daughter-in-law had moved a partition in front of the salad bar so we couldn’t see it. We ordered the additional salad bar to go with our steaks which was an extra $4.95. (Before she came in it was extra $2.95) Went behind that partition to get salad bar and the only thing there was a big bowl of lettuce, sliced yellow onions, some sweet pickles and the dressings. Two of the family there were the aunt and uncle where I’d gotten the bulk of those green tomatoes. When the waitress came to check on us after we’d fixed our salad bar I told her we’d like some tomato and cucumber, at least, with the salad. She went off and that new manager came out to our table and said, “you people don’t know what you’re asking, do you know what tomatos cost now? If I put tomatoes out on my salad bar I’d lose money on every customer!” She ranted quite a bit more as the aunt, who is a retired accountant and quite direct in her speech gave her the rundown on what we were paying for steaks etc, with the price increase of salad bar calculated in. The two of them, drew some attention in the entire cafe, our group had 4 tables pushed together in the middle. I was steaming mad. I drove the 5 blocks home, brought back a basket of tomatoes, set them in the middle of our table to the delight of all in the cafe that night. We changed our monthly birthday spot. The uncle has now passed away, the aunt turned 92 this month and my husband and I now live 30th miles further down the road but I still get congratulated over my tomatoes when the restaurant wouldn’t even sell them.

We learned our lesson with Burgess too late. All the seedless grapes have seeds. None of the fruit trees have ever borne fruit. The two pear trees are ornamental - but were supposed to be fruit trees.

Oh well, we bought a couple of apple trees from Walmart this year, so maybe sometime we will get some fruit.
