So, here I am, sitting in the pre-dawn hours of a Saturday in October, three weeks away from an election that will determine the course of our nation's future.
As I am sitting here, reading the various articles on FR, I note that there are a few that are stating that the possibility of an actual shooting war with Russia is a valid possibility. This is due to our idiot President and his lackeys accusing Russia of interfering with our elections.
As I read these articles, a cold dread enters my mind...a dread I have not felt in over a decade.
When I was growing up, I (and, I'm sure most of you) lived under the constant threat of the old Soviet Union launching an all-out nuclear war against the United States. When I was a teenager, I was very curious about such things, and I studied nuclear war, how it might be fought, and how to defend against it. On that last part, I soon realized that there really is NO way to defend against it. There is nowhere you could go in this world to get totally away from the after-effects of a nuclear exchange.
In the 80's I joined the US Army. In my time there, I was stationed in Germany. I was part of a unit that was armed with nuclear weapons (Pershing 2). If the balloon went up, I was sitting right smack dab in the middle of a bulls-eye for Soviet targeters. We trained for the eventuality that the Soviets would come pouring through the Fulda Gap in vast numbers, hoping to conquer Western Europe with a massive lightning assault...and knowing that, if they did, they'd probably unleash WW3. And, it would NOT be confined to Europe.
I left the Army in 1986. Some 3 years later, the Berlin Wall fell. Soon after, many Eastern Bloc regimes also fell. And, finally, in 1991, after a failed attempt by hard-liners to re-assert a strong ultra-Communist government, the Soviet Union fell. I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that....maybe, just maybe....the threat of nuclear war was done.
Some 10 years later, for a few days in September of 2001, the fear returned after 9/11. I wondered if Islamic terrorists had gained access to a nuke and were about to use it against us. Thankfully, that fear turned out to be unfounded (for now, at least), and my fear subsided.
Now, 15 years after 9/11, I find that fear coming back in all it's dark oppression. Yes, I knew that Russia still has nukes, and they're still poised on missiles, but I never thought they'd have a reason to use them ever again. Now, thanks to the blustering and threats from our idiot President (and his even-stupider Vice President), it seems that Russia may have a reason to use them again.
Do I have to live in fear again, waiting for the sound of air-raid sirens? Am I going to have to be listening for the sounds on an EAS alert on my radio or TV, stating we're under a notional emergency due to a inbound nuclear attack?
Where I live an work, there is no escape. I did some checking this morning. Where I live, I am about 5 miles from a major Joint Base. I can guess there are at least 2 Russian warheads targeted there. Where I work, I am in right smack-dab in a triangle of three naval bases, one of which is a submarine base for Trident ballistic missile subs. At the farthest, one base is only 7 miles away.
What can I do amidst all this talk of possible war?

“Does anyone else experience this kind of fear?”
Yes, and more so every day.
I don’t know if Russia is interfering our election, but suspect it it just more lies from the establishment (GOP, DNC, MSM, etc.) because despite their manufactured polling numbers, I believe they know is actually leading at the moment and they will do anything to hold onto the status quo even if it means going to war with Russia.
So, again, yeah I’m afraid if what the future holds for us.
My comment should read: “I believe they know Trump is actually leading...”
Damn it.
The start of WW3 began some time ago. It is not likely that it will go hot... it is a virtual certainty if hILLary wins.
A war that will kill mostly whites...
I miss the good old days sitting at the Launch Control Console, drinking some Air Force coffee, watching the blinking lights on the Missile Guidance Console, wondering what Ivan was doing at his silo!!
Ballistic Missile Analyst Technician for Titan II Launch Crew R003, circa 1973.
Being a Christian means not having to fear death. And when I look at the America around me- an America where there is gay marriage, abortion, tattooed stoners who look like they fell face-first into open tackle boxes, thugs in sagging pants roaming about screaming ‘racism!’ every time they are held accountable for their crimes, corrupt politicians and their media flunkies colluding to elect a greedy old Marxist hag, well,I see something that deserves to be nuked.
It wasn’t that long ago I recall reading Russia was under financial pressure due to falling oil and natural gas prices. Did they run out of cash?
I remember the 1962 Cuban missile crisis and the school bomb drills and the paranoia living under the prospect of nuclear annihilation for decades. The Soviet leaders were isolated from reality and dangerous. Communism was expanding and seemed unstoppable, and then it collapsed from the weakness of its own internal contradictions. The Russia of today is a different world. Yes, Putin idealizes the past and has ambitions to restore Russia’s greatness and self respect, but he is not crazy. He knows we would would survive a first strike to retaliate and he does not want a nuclear exchange any more than we do. You should worry more about Iran or other Muslims that have no fear of dying.
Your own body will attack you before the Russians do. Make your peace with God, we all have an appointment to meet him.
I don’t think Obama wants this war either. He’s been digging his heels in and CIA, Carter have been working around Obama. We may see this war started not by Congress, or even the President, buy by a mutinous Carter and CIA.
Definitely a better way of saying it.
