I thought the sword of Damocles was withdrawn in ‘91. I grew up nearby to too many strategic assets to believe I had even a small chance of surviving a nuclear exchange. The ghosts of the cold war are rattling their sabers again and everyone is less safe because of it.

I lived a tenth of a mile from a missile silo in the mid-90’s. One day, during a picnic in the park, we watched a truck pull up, and saw the missile come up out of the ground and onto the truck, which then drove away. It was quite a thing, realizing there was a nuclear warhead right there before our eyes.
