Almost half of men admit to trimming or shaving their leg hair – en eyebrow raising admission, even for a generation of spornosexual manscapers.

Male hair trimming that rarely concerns body hair south of the border, unless you’re a professional swimmer or cyclist – but these days average Joes everywhere are taking razors to their hairy pins.

Surveying their Facebook followers, Men’s Health found that while the majority of men are not completely shaving their legs, a surprising 15 per cent are, while a further 33 per cent admitted: “I don’t shave clean, but I do use a trimmer to cut it down”. That’s nearly half of the men polled that are tackling their leg hair in some way or form – but why?

Yes, they wore silk stockings but they also removed the hair on their legs because it made their stocking fit more smoothly. Let's not even talk about their stuffing their stockings with sawdust. :)

Women didn't tend to shave their legs because their legs were not on display the way the male leg was. But some of them would dampen their gowns so they would cling and show off their figures.

Humans are vain creatures.

Please believe me...NOBODY wears shorts, more, today, than the men in Bermuda have for many, many, MANY decades and they did NOT shave their legs!

This stupid "fad" is just queer...as in PECULIAR.

That’s because men dressed like peacocks back then; they also wore lots of fine lace.

Reminds me of the required diamond engagement ring tradition and De Beers. I knew of the band but didn’t know where Beau Brummell came from.

“He also introduced the idea that a gentleman should not drown himself in scent and should change his underwear daily.”

Well this is standard I can support.

It’s cyclical and cultural.

The Romans spent a lot of time removing/shaving body hair. I think the Greeks - some cities back then - did too.

The guys were not pansies.

They might not have for all I know. I’m no expert, I don’t even know whey they are supposedly shaving their legs now, I wear shorts shamefully unshaved. But the wigs...I mean if you are wearing a wig in the first place I might not put it past you to shave your dumb legs too.

Dampening bodices ( think wet t-shirt contests) was a French thing, which started at Versailles under the reign of Marie Antoinette, when the ladies pretended to be sheppardesses.

The shapely calf was more often than not a bag filled with sawdust or some such; that is true. The leg shaving is not. :-)

The length of men's hair, beards/no beards, etc. are all fashion statements that come and go.

Humans are also and always have been, victims of fashion crazes. And then there were the "SUMPTUARY LAWS". :-)

LOL...good for you!

I love history so I do know a lot of this stuff, also, I had to take several theatre classes when I was in college and had to study this stuff, for a costume & makeup class.

I don’t mind hairy men. I do think it’s masculine. But heavy back hair and super wooly arms is a bit much. I don’t mind leg hair on guys.

I live in SoCal and I’ve worn shorts every single day. For decades. I’ve had plenty of admiring comments from women (and even the occasional poofter) about my legs but not once has it been that I ought to shave them. Sounds like a pajama boy fad to me.

If you don’t want to shave them then dont. But hairy legs are hardly a symbol of manhood - as if you worked so hard to get them. Not.

Exactly. And trying to connect a hairy body as a standard of masculinity is retarded. Are we also not allowed to shave our faces or backs? Who decides? Lets face it - sometimes too much body hair is unsigjtly, if not downright gross.

Sounds like BS, PJ boy crap to me too. :-)

Starting in silent films, dashing Hollywood actors shaved their chests, for swashbuckling films. Legs? NEVER!

The Tarzan actors were all pretty hairless where one could see, but starting with Johnny Weissmuller, many had been Olympic swimmers.

Elmo Lincoln was the first movie Tarzan and he was hairless too. *shrugs*

"FASHION" decides; that's who.

The Ancient Romans viewed the bearded "barbarians, as uncivilized, crude, and low end savages.

Sideburns ( named for Ambrose Burnside ) became the fashion in the mid 186y0s and came back into vogue 100 years later; sans the mustache.

I don’t believe this one bit!

The "survey" was not random. It was of "Men's Health" facebook followers. There aren't a lot of normal men reading a publication called "Men's Health".

Competitive swimmers were the only dudes I knew who shaved their legs and that was because they believed it would reduce drag. They didn’t have any trouble attracting girls when they weren’t shaving.
