After a deadly school shooting in October that killed a six-year-old student, South Carolina Rep. Joshua Putnam (R) introduced a new bill that would allow teachers to carry a gun to protect children:
It would incorporate mostly live shooter scenarios. So then teachers are familiar with how to approach that gunman on campus, how to interact with getting children away from danger situations and how to confront that until law enforcement arrives, said Putnam.
Judy ONeal, a teacher in Rock Hills, supports the idea. She believes that a teacher with proper training would improve safety in schools. She also knows it will not go into effect overnight:
I believe it will take a lot of planning and a lot of scrutinizing before it just hops on to campus, ONeal said.
Dr. Jacqueline Persinski told Fox News she does not support the bill, believing that more guns cause more violence. Instead, she wants the responsibility of protecting children to stay with the school resource officers (SRO):
Our police officers are trained by profession to handle hostile situations, and teachers are not, Persinski said. If a situation were to occur, I believe our SRO and police are well-trained and fully capable of managing it effectively and efficiently. Teachers are trained to protect students in lockdown procedures and will protect the students until police arrive. Using weapons is completely different.

How can you protect someone else when you can’t even protect yourself?
So as not to create a vanity, but to stay on topic of your article — this is my post to commemorate getting my concealed carry license yesterday. I live in Arizona now, so I have carried for a number of years as occasion dictates, but having the license covers me in all sorts of states as I travel the country.
It also takes away any of those pesky issues of being in a Fed gun free zone without a permit, etc.
If I thought in a high school, I would also want a baseball bat.
So, Jackie..
If I came at you right now would having a gun protect you, or a cop somewhere else?
Right now, pop you in the jaw and kick you in the head NOW..
Silly cow.
We cannot really trust public school teachers to educate their pupils. Can we trust them with firearms?
Uh....’allow’??? Sheesh!
congratulations on getting your ccw. if i read this correctly you think you can carry on federali property (excluding national parks BUT including buildings in those parks) and school property. YOU WOULD BE WRONG. in Colorado we can conceal carry almost every where including churches, bars, liquor stores, poling places but not on school or federali property. You might want to check on what states accept your CHP. Mexifornia won't and i suspect the rest of the left coast, most of the northeastern states and probably SC won't either. i suggest taking LEGAL ASPECTS OF CONCEALED CARRY at your earliest opportunity. i take one every year to stay current on laws in my state.
when SC recognizes my Colorado CHP i will really care about anything in SC. i REALLY want to visit again but their stupid reciprocity laws make it “uncomfortable.”
Not to worry. I don’t plan to carry into a National Park that does not permit same.
The school issue is the 1000 foot thingy that puts the State Law (in AZ) and the Fed Law in conflict. I don’t plan to carry on school property, but I essentially live across from a school so by having the concealed carry license I am not in violation coming and going from my own property.
