“Is there something inherently wrong with a 60 degree slant?”
No, just the GM 60-degree V6 engines as a series during the 1990s. For example the 3100, 3.4L, and 3800(Series I,II). They had a habit of coolant and oil getting together way too often.
When fixed and otherwise well-maintained, they deliver a pleasing growl.
“What no longer exists is a car with SIZE and simplicity.”
For me, that’d be closer to the larger Caprice/Impalas and Crown Victorias. They had as much or as little as one would want.
Unfortunately, the environmentalists would rather have people drive econoboxes with turbocharged I4’s instead.
I’m discovering that certain vehicles just live on, sort of eternal cars and trucks, due to their desirable traits and sufficient numbers of owners and shops who want to keep them going. Aftermarket parts manufactured and even improved upon by third parties abound.
I say that because I’ve been researching the GMC motorhome of the 70’s, those cool looking ones that everybody who was around at the time still recall. It’s astounding, the innovations that are still being created for those things, new suspensions, new engines, revised and remanufactured transmissions, just about anything you’d want or need, almost to the point that you could build a new one from aftermarket parts given the desire, time and money to do so.
I suspect the final iterations of full-size, V-8, body on frame American cars will be among those eternal cars. They fill a want and need that isn’t filled by anything on the market now, well, except maybe a full size pickup truck. But, not everybody needs a pickup or can afford a new one.
Many states allow vehicles to “age out” of emissions testing, which is the source for a lot of the bugaboos in older vehicles. De-smog the engine, if it’s old enough and your state will register and license it.
There are forums for every popular make and model of old car, and common problems will have common solutions, perhaps even superior aftermarket replacements, or so I’ve found as I mentioned. Most don’t bother until it affects the actual function and usability of the vehicle, though.
