The 104th Annual Grey Cup CFL Championship from Toronto occurs today. The US has the more capable players but the Canadian game is a much more interesting and exiting game. With a longer and wider field, an extra player and one less down, it is much more wide open. No 'run, run, run, punt', repeated ad nauseum, interrupted by the odd 'Hail Mary' pass.

I am quite conflicted about this game. My birth hometown team is playing my 'adopted' hometown team. Too bad it cannot end in a tie.

Calgary. No western canadian would ever root for Ottawa.

Me, too. I’m an Ottawa kid but have lived in Calgary longer (and better!).
Go Stamps (and if they choke again, I can live with Ottawa winning their first Cup in 40 years).

But go Stamps anyway!

Cheers,
Jim

As I wrote, this is a ‘hometown’ versus ‘hometown’ thing. Calgary is my Western team and Ottawa is my ‘original’ team, though these aren’t the Rough Riders (thanks to the SECOND Roughriders team in Canada quashing the use of the name ‘Rough Riders’ for the new Ottawa franchise. Gosh darn green flatlanders!)

IF they were called the ‘Rough Riders’, the choice would be easy (RR)! If it were ANYBODY but an Ottawa team, it would be easy (Stamps). No such luck today. May the best team win! (On paper, that looks like the Stamps.)

Ah, don’t remind me. Born in SK, grew up in BC, so I too have 2 teams but was nauseated by the RR name when what? 3 teams called themselves Roughriders? LOL For this thread alone, I started to remember what Doug Flutie did for us when I was wee kid.

Game is on ESPN2 here in the US.

My CFL team is Saskatchewan, but they didn’t have a very good year.

South Park made fun of that.

If you catch the scoreboard you can see the obvious mistake they made.

LOL yeah, I remember that. Back in the 90’s, the TSN announcers would sometimes lose their composure and laugh while saying something like :

“the Roughriders are at the field goal line and the Roughriders are starting to get to their defensive formation..”

My uncle would say “No wonder the Americans laugh at us, we can’t even think of another team name than Roughriders..

Note that Ottawa had a losing record during the regular season.

Had Edmonton not choked, this would have been another “Battle of Alberta”.

What Edmonton was doing in the EASTERN final is beyond me!

The Rough Riders were the first CFL team with the name. The Saskaberry team's name is a mere copy, an example of 'original' Saskatchewan thinking. 😋

The RRs were founded in 1876, as the Ottawa Football Club (OFC) and adopted the name 'Rough Riders' in 1898. When the OFC was founded, Regina did not even exist! The flatlander's team was created only in 1910, 12 years AFTER the Ottawa team chose the name. Again, 'original' thinking from Saskatchewan; of all the names that were available, they chose a name already in use! (The same kind of thinking cost them the 2009 Grey Cup. Using both hands, they came up with 13 players on the field!)

A team run by 'gentlemen' would have allowed the new Ottawa franchise to re-instate their storied old name, as happened with the three incarnations of the Allouettes however, the flatlanders are not run by 'gentlemen'.

While I dislike 'official' Ottawa, the RRs are a part of my DNA, attending many games at Lansdowne Park, out yelling the 'Southsiders' ("Southside sucks") then heading to the 'famous P' for a couple of quarts of beer. Rough Riders football was 'blue collar', separate from the effete 'swivel servants' that worked in Place du Portage, Terraces de la Chaudiere and Place de Ville.

Go REDBLACKS! Go Stamps!

Ottawa Redblacks? I am out of the loop. They must have dug really deep for a name that wouldn’t offend anyone. I’m offended, however. There are plenty of perfectly good colors they left out of their name.

I was watching some of it. It looks like Ottawa is in the driver’s seat now after that last fumble recovery...and then going on to score a touchdown.

The SEC has three sets of Tigers (I suppose you could call Auburn the “War Eagles” if they play Mizzou or LSU), or LSU the “Bayou Bengals,” and two sets of Bulldogs.
