In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
seiche [seesh]
adjective
The water is darkened by mud and sand churned up by the ferocious currents. As the waves oscillate, the lake can become as much as 2 metres deeper at one end, while dropping 2 metres at the other. Waves violently smack one shoreline before the pattern reverses. When the conditions are just right, a seiche or standing wave can occur.

I think she has everyone going around in circles.
I know what that is!
I learned about it in my oceanography class.
Gathering intact specimens from the pounding waves is difficult enough under ordinary conditions, thinks the souvenir collector as she looks out over the ocean, concerned that the sandbar deposited by a recent hurricane will create a seiche hell, where she sells sea shells by the seashore.
It’s a standing wave that sets up in a closed area, like a lake.
Something like it can be formed in swimming pools when someone cannonballs into one end and the water sloshes from one end to the other.
I’m from Erie - - I’d like to read that explanation of Eries seiche wave.. Do you have a link?
Oh seiche! (Of which “I” at least have been using for nigh onto 60 years nowdays a an explective for shitte, but which at long last has been promoted to an authorized word!) can we at least prohibit another exception to the “i” before “e” except when sounded as “a” rule fer us punsters?
Mark Frost’s career rose as a seiche: high for an instant on twin peaks, then gone.
Yes, one morning in the early 50s. Swept a bunch of fishermen off of a pier, and there were several fatalities.
Very nice.
Try another synonym. That always works, almost.
Do not remember where I found it. Google “Seiche wave Lake Erie.” If that does not work pretty much all info is already on this thread.
Not sure we can do that. The word has cachet and purchase even among the scientifically endowed.
Duly noted, above. Excellent comparison.
The power of a seiche must be in its cyclonic pretensions.
