There’s a reason for everything... Ohio University in 1998 (Athens Ohio) sued Ohio State University (Columbus Ohio) over the right to utilize (market etc) the name “OHIO” under the precedent that Ohio University first used the name OHIO in the mid-late 1800’s.

“The Ohio State University” allows OSU to signify the College in Columbus without infringing on Ohio University’s “trademark”.

Yeah it’s less than ideal.
