These 'crazy ants' love to munch on cellphones and TVs. Are they headed your way?

Although the insects are so named for their swarming maneuvers, the term is equally apt for the damage they inflict on the human psyche. For reasons not fully understood, the ants are found in large numbers near electrical equipment and wall sockets. Cellphones and television sets have succumbed to the ant swarms, and the insects damaged electronics in a Houston-area industrial park...

Like the infamous fire ant, the crazy ant is a South American native that made its way to the Lone Star state. The animals do not coexist peacefully. The crazy ant – despite its less painful venom – has a chemical upper hand, scientists discovered in 2014. The crazy ants secrete a substance that neutralizes the fire ant acid, and are thus able to overwhelm the enemy ants....

There are a few advantages to living in a place where winter temps drop to the single-digits.

People don’t really care much about fire ants, but if you tell them ants that will eat their smart phone are coming up from Mexico, then they’ll want to build the wall :)

My wife discovered this year that she has an allergic reaction to fire ants and has to carry an epipen. Crazy ants MIGHT be an upgrade for her. Especially since we don't have a TV and don't typically carry cell phones. I hope they don't like computers.

If they help eliminate fire ants, they aren’t all bad but if you have the typical outdoor central AC unit, you’re in for a headache. There is something about electrical vibrations and electrical wiring that just sends these buggers into hyperdrive. BTW, the “crazy ant” name comes from their method of not moving in a straight line. They zig zag their way across from point A to point B making them harder to zap.

Makes me wonder why don’t import anteaters.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly I don't know why she swallowed a fly - perhaps she'll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a spider, That wriggled and wiggled and tiggled inside her; She swallowed the spider to catch the fly; I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a bird; How absurd to swallow a bird. She swallowed the bird to catch the spider, She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;... ... ...

I used to know a guy who did TV repair in Philadelphia. He said that sets that came in from certain parts of the city were not even worth working on, the roach infestations were so bad. They wouldn't even bring them into the shop. The owners of the sets rarely came back for them anyway.

The University of Texas is planning to crossbreed these ants with fire ants.

The planned new hybrid is to be called SAMSUNG ANTS. :-)

Well, I did live in Michigan, which gets quite cold in the winter, but in the summer mosquito populations were overwhelming.

Go a bit north of where I was and black flies are a problem.

But we don't get fire ants, or those goofy roaches they have in Florida which also like living in electrical appliances.

I had a ‘crazy ant’ infestation in the back yard in Houston. Terminix had to come out several times to get rid of the beasts!
