Star Trek: Discovery Finds Its Lead With a Current Walking Dead Actress
TVGuide ^ | December 14, 2016

Star Trek: Discovery finally has its star. The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green will headline the first Star Trek series in over a decade for CBS All Access, TVGuide.com has learned. Martin-Green will play a lieutenant commander in the new series hitting CBS' streaming network in May 2017. This is the first time that a Star Trek series won't be anchored by a character playing a captain, but according to Entertainment Weekly, who first reported the news, Martin-Green's character's position as lieutenant will have "caveats."

Casting an African-American female to lead the series was a big priority for the show's original showrunner, Bryan Fuller, who left the show earlier this fall due to his other creative commitments. Sonequa Martin-Green's casting follows the announcement that Rent alum Anthony Rapp will also be playing the openly gay Lt. Stamets, an "astromycologist" and Starfleet Science Officer.

Maybe we could make a fortune selling headstone stickers that say, “I’m dead and I vote.”

So it's possible her part is an homage to Ms. Barrett's character.

  We'll see.

No problem with her in the lead. She kicks much buttocks in TWD. Forcing upon everyone a homosexual, again, is getting old.
I like Star Trek shows, but will 100% be skipping this one.

I dunno. I'd follow Janeway into Hell. She pulled off some serious miracles without a Wesley.
Dunno about Janeway but I'd definitely follow Seven of Nine.

Negan is the most amazing evil guy. But I think I figured him out... show some minor disrespect, you die.

Attempt to shoot Negan or gun down 5 of his people with a machine gun, you are set free and even get some lemonade while you watch him kill one of your friends.

We’re all sad because he killed a few of the people we know. Rick and Co. murdered dozens of his in their sleep, but it’s cool because we didn’t know them. They got off light (not that Negan isn’t a grade-A d***).

Sonequa Martin-Green's casting

Well, she's easy on the eyes - gives me a reason to watch.

An astromycologist lances Klingon assterrhoids and ‘expresses’ impacted alien anal glands.
It isn’t a job for the faint of heart.

They should name it “Star Trek: Agenda”

Or, “Star Trek: Va....”

She had seven of nine. All that collective knowledge.

Astromycologist? So his specialty is to tour the galaxy looking for mushrooms and fungus? I’m a big fan of Star Trek but this sounds ridiculous.

Who is his significant other? The guy responsible for changing the batteries on the tricorders?

I might catch the pilot, but I suspect I’ll skip this one, especially since CBS wants to make it exclusive to their new streaming network. I think the market is pretty saturated with streaming services and won’t bear another one.

If they wanted people to see it in the USA, they should have licensed it to Netflix like they did for all the other countries (Canada, UK, etc.) who will get to enjoy it on Netflix.

“Won’t last 2.It won’t garner much beyond Star Trek fans, we’ve already soured on female captains.”

I’m afraid you’re right.
They have already had a Black Captain Lead, and a Female Captain Lead, now they are going with the Black AND Female Captain lead...

Negan goes deeper than that.

He breaks the strong into following him. He has no use for the weak. Those that stand up to him are his challenge.

His right hand man. For example.

So I had to go see who she is.

So relieved it was not the one with the dreadlocks that make me itch, every time I see them.

Last week, I was in line behind a white couple with “dreads” and I thought I would lose my mind.

Kept waiting for God-knows-what to come crawling out of their hair.

Bernie voters, I think.

Horribly, I agree with you.

I’ve just started watching and binged 1-3, got bored with the constant soap opera/zombie killing and started watching the new season.

Negan is the only character with any panache, at all, *but* I also totally dig King Ezekiel.

And Carl’s eye looks so fake, it’s a sin.

They run out of money for makeup, after the bazillion zombies?

And we're done.

Star Trek always pushed the envelope a bit on social issues, but this sounds like it is willfully and shamelessly PC. I was already disappointed it would only be available through CBS All Access, but this might be what makes me just ignore it altogether unless early (credible) sources deem it truly exceptional.

Never watched anything after DS9. Somebody told me Jeri Ryan’s Borg name was “Thirty Eight of Double-D.”
