NEW YORK (AP) — The late rapper Tupac Shakur and Seattle-based rockers Pearl Jam lead a class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees including folkie Joan Baez and 1970s favorites Journey, Yes and Electric Light Orchestra.

The rock hall, in downtown Cleveland, also said Tuesday it would give a special award to Nile Rodgers, whose disco-era band Chic failed again to make the cut after its 11th time nominated.

Baez will be inducted only months after her 1960s paramour, Bob Dylan, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Since when is Tupac a “Rock-N-Roll Artist”? He was a rapper who was a thug wanna-be who got himself shot over gang and drug garbage.

So sadly true. One of the most unique and talented bassists ever, as witnessed in the virtuosity of “Roundabout”. I met Chris at a party in spring 1980, before the Drama tour. Gave him homemade tollhouse cookies.

It is possible there aren't enough actual rock fans so they are trying to broaden the market

There are plenty of rock fans, but a lot of them are quite disgusted. The Rock Hall has redefined rock as what's commercially successful and preferably anti-social norms. It's criminal that they're messing up an understanding of Rock as an art form and an incredible cultural achievement.

These "all things for all people" inductees do seem to be their way of getting people to visit.

Wonderful story! Thanks for sharing. He absolutely was one of the most unique and talented bassists ever! Amazing musician. The world is less without him in it.

Was Chris a vegan like Jon Anderson and Steve Howe? I guess tollhouse cookies are vegan..

I'm with you. I too appreciate rap...but, admittedly, in moderation. But then again, my tastes in music covers a wide range and spans many generations...centuries, actually... so I'm partial to almost anything.

While many here disagree with Rap as being a part of rock, rock, rap, and all forms of music abound, in general, continue to "evolve" by incorporating different styles for that "cross-over" appeal, so to speak. After all, for musicians, that's part of the art of making music. As for listeners, most listeners tend to stick to what they gravitate towards or grew up with, anyway.

As for why induct Tupac? I'm sure someone in the Hall of Fame will be happy to explain it during the ceremony, if they haven't done so, yet. Although, at this rate, it seems to me they should eventually change the name to the "Pop Music Hall Of Fame."

Journey should have been in years ago.

Exactly. It’s Jan Wenner’s play toy.

And we still go see the Moody Blues about every time they come to town. Also, Justin Hayward will sometimes do a solo tour that’s really an acoustic show with limited accompaniment, two others with him, non Moodys. Worthwhile.

Joan Baez...rock? Please! She did some great stuff way back (yes,I love early-mid 60’s folk) but she's not “rock”.She's not even “pop”.Tupack? OK,induct him but only with a ceremony that features a police photo of his bullet ridden body.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame became a joke a long time ago. Recently, it seems every year when I hear the new induction class, I say 'you gotta to be kidding' or 'who is that?' for a least one artist.

IMO, the Electric Light Orchestra should have already been in, ahead of lots people who are already inducted, and I'm okay with Journey, although they are a little after my time. Joan Baez? Really? She is a folk singer - has she ever claimed to be a rock and roller? Maybe they should change their name to the Pop Music HOF, if the rock and roll genre is too narrow.

Well I guess he wasn't at that time, since they are made with eggs. He had never eaten one before. After the first bite, he grabbed a whole handful!

First Chris, then Keith Emerson, now Greg Lake - all leaving us far too soon. As a devotee of classic Prog rock, this breaks my heart. We came close to losing Jon Anderson and Kerry Livgren (Kansas) but did not, so at least there is something to be thankful for.

Hopefully the Rock & Roll HOF will stop snubbing the giants of Prog, like Kansas, King Crimson, ELP, the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull, just for starters.
