I too made a winter trip to the GC.
The signs, rangers and handout bulletins said the north rim was closed.

So we didn't go there and returned home safely.
True story. The winter is a great time to see the canyon however. No crowds.

The North Rim is about 1000 feet higher altitude than the South Rim. No wonder it gets more snow. So what were these people doing there when it was closed?

I spent New Years Day 1976 at El Tovar on the South Rim with my outdoorsy girlfriend (she enjoyed winter snow camping). The GC in the dead of winter is indeed magnificent...and quiet.
