Gotta make it lighter so the women gunners can haul it.

The real weight issue with the M2 is that it’s recoil rather than gas operated.

The weight is what it is, that doesn’t bother me, especially since it’s usually mounted on a vehicle. The worst part of the M2 was the really involved process to correct headspace and timing. If they can just update that part, they can leave the rest as far as I’m concerned.

Lone Ranger: Get us one of those new lightweight machine guns, Tonto.

Tonto: Me do, Kemo Sabe.

I’d be interested to see the performance of titanium barrels versus steel. Titanium has better heat tolerance, which might translate into being able to fire longer before overheating.

Nothing screams “overwhelming firepower” better than a 50 cal. SBR in close quarter combat! :-)

Titanium costs what the Russians ask.

not the issue... picture the recoil 5 times more powerful than it is. anticipate a lot of bruised shoulders

While the raw material itself is more expensive, consider that the machine time for titanium is 2-3 times longer than for standard gun steels...expect the increase cost of the new weapon to reflect that.
