A teen from Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, was charged with a felony after a high school dodgeball game took a violent turn.
Jacob Sigler, 18, was charged with one count of substantial battery in connection with the Oct. 11 incident at Ellsworth High School.
According to the criminal complaint filed back in December, Sigler punched another student in the head after a game of dodgeball.
The victim and his mother reported the incident to police. The then 16-year-old told police that during gym class, Sigler and three other boys were throwing balls at him. He then threw one back at Sigler.
He said that he and Sigler hadnt had issues in the past.
After Sigler ran out of balls, he closed his fist and punched [the victim] in the face, knocking him to the ground.
According to the victims mother, a CT scan revealed that he sustained a facial fracture.
In an interview with police, Sigler said the game was a friendly fight, just a competitive game of dodgeball, and that he was struck in the face with a ball thrown by the victim.

had they gone to the principal, nothing would have been done.
Dodgeball, as I recall from my yuth, is not exactly the sort of 'game' that encourages friendly interactions between people.
I remember it as being pretty harmless in elementary.
My school could not afford anything buy Nerf-style foam balls, so I guess the lack of injury didnt hurt.
In my Jr High back in the 70s I think we used soccer balls.
Could he dodge a wrench?
Might as well just change schools now.
We used the red plastic balls that had a good bit of give to them. Had a great guy gym teacher.
Now my old elementary school doesnt do dodge ball or any sport, where scores are kept. Female gym teacher.
...at the same Jr High, my dopey gym teacher, for softball, had us line up near the 3rd base line to wait to bat. Sure enough, one day someone pulled a rocket that hit me smack in the face. I went to the school nurse and she sent me home...alone. I lived about 2 miles from the school and had to walk home in that dazed condition. If that had happened today, we probably could have sued the school for a million bucks.
Yeah, HS is too old for dodge ball. That’s just asking for this kind of thing.
Dodge
Duck
Dip
Dive
and Dodge...
We had a sadistic gym teacher and all our dodge ball games were border line felony assault. We played with soccer balls, that can do some real damage when thrown hard. During the game, the gym teacher would blow a whistle and both teams would race to switch sides. You couldn’t throw until you reached the other side, but the aggressive kids in front could take a few quick steps to cross the line, trapping the kids on the other team who tried to hide in the back, at which point they could run them down and slam them with the ball, without ever letting go of the ball. It was about like getting punched in the face. Our gym teacher considered it a lesson for those that tried to hide in the back.
“In my Jr High back in the 70s I think we used soccer balls.”
Yep same here and they stung like hell. I was the 8th grade gym class champion (1973 or so) over much more athletic and bigger bad-ass kids. Not because I was a physical specimen, rather... I was quick and smart. I won mainly by catching their throws. Damn I was proud of myself...
We used red rubber balls that were smaller than volley balls and could be thrown harder. They had Rawlings imbedding on the side. If you were hit hard enough that the coach could read Rawlings in your skin you could go take a shower and set in the stands for the rest of the period. Only one fat kid was able to meet this standard.
Quite a few of the classmates still talk about those games.
I doubt if there will be dodge ball games in heaven.
“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.”
Good gloves do win it. :) Soccer balls are pretty hard though... mostly dodge ball is played with that red rubber mush ball. As a kid I liked it cuz I could throw it hard using my rocket arm. ~grin~ I'd bounce it off them that it could almost hit the gym ceiling. The last time I spoke about dodge ball some moron took offense to the kid's game because I was good LoL.
Dodge ball. The hockey of middle school. “I went to a Jr. High fight and a Dodge ball game broke out.”
A school fight makes the news? Back in my day, fights like this & worse at school did NOT make the news. What’s up? Slow news day at Fox?
We must have gone to the same school ;- And if you ticked someone off in the game, you’d get the crap beat out of you in the showers. There were time when a pervy gym teacher voyeur would have bee welcome.
If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball. . .
;-)
