NFL Wild Card weekend was bad, but Roger Goodell wants to make it worse

Remember when the NFL playoffs were fun?

Can you recall the time before backup quarterbacks (and highly paid quarterbacks that play like backups) and atrocious, record-setting (and not in a good way) defenses took the field on Wild Card weekend?

Felt like watching 1 vs. 16 seeds in the NCAA tournament. The worst weekend of NFL playoffs in my memory.

Roger Goodell makes everything worse. He couldn’t be more bumbling if he actively tried.

I expected the Giants-Packers game to be very competitive, but even that one turned into a blowout (following the Hail Mary play from Rodgers near the end of the first half). Not to mention also the Miami-Pittsburgh game (but mind you, the Detroit-Seattle one was not too surprising).

Both games were entertaining. Watched it using OTA, not ESPN.

I didn’t watch the game, but it sounds like the Giants-Packers were close until midway through the third quarter. The sports radio guys in New York this morning were fending off calls from listeners who expect the Packers to beat Dallas next week. The radio guys are suggesting that the Packers aren’t likely to win on the road against a team that has any semblance of a running game.

All the professional sports leagues are slowly, but surely, making their regular seasons completely pointless.

No such thing as an HD antenna even though they’re advertised as such, but yeah, it a high-gain thing, it’s on a rotor where we can even pick up Canadian channels. We can get about fifty channels.

The Lions might have been a more formidable foe if Matt Stafford’s finger weren’t loosely dangling off his hand.

LOL. Spare me. (I haven't watched the Lions in 20+ years. My Sundays have been fantastic).

The only football I've watched all year were the 2nd & 3rd Qs of Clemson / Ohio State (my son lured me into his house with an offer of a steak dinner)

Back in the 70’s and 80’s the participation in the NFL playoffs was described by the late Jack Tatum of the Oakland Raiders as the “Dash for the Cash”. Winning playoff games and the Super Bowl were a significant part of NFL players earnings. Not anymore. Winning is secondary to the desire for longevity. Most players would sacrifice 6 years of winning for 10 years of losing.

It shows during the last couple of games every season. “PLEASE don’t let me get hurt.” is written all over the quality of play.

This year several college players believing themselves to be high draft choices sat out bowl games. If I were a GM in the NFL it would be a massive negative. It would be the first indication of a selfish player.

Aside from it’s coddling queers and communists, the root problem with the NFL is that there are too many teams.

Until Goodell goes and taking a knee is banashed with firings and suspensions I have banned the. NFL in my house.

Lions were missing key players that left their defense castrated. Stafford had some success with the finger splint but not like when he was much more accurate earler in the season. And if teams or the league could call penalties on the Refs, well they would have won their division in Dallas or at least would have hung on against pitiful Seattle until the end or overtime. /IMHO

Well said. The NFL has become the Poser Bowl.

Same here. NFL: Negros, Felons, and Liberals, no one else wanted.

A very very long way from when the ‘College All Stars’ played an NFL team pre season ...

(not sure whether it was the ‘champ’ or not but they were out there...)

Doesn't that come next week, when New England plays Houston, essentially nullifying this past weekend?

Concerning the NHL, the Original Six brand my Dad grew up with had 70 regular season games and two playoff rounds (the Toronto Maple Leafs won their last Stanley Cup in 1967 even before Mother’s Day).

I can remember even as a kid the New York Islanders (Trottier and Potvin) and Edmonton Oilers (Gretzky and Messier) won all of their Cups shortly before or right after the May 24 long weekend (Victoria Day in Canada) during their great runs in the 1980s.

Nowadays, the playoffs grind on well into June and after a while, the whole thing becomes irrelevant and really not the fun or happy thing it was even during the Gretzky era (let alone when ones like Bobby Hull or Frank Mahovlich or Bobby Orr or Guy Lafleur were in the league).

been watching football since the early 50s. Jim Brown, Otto Graham, Lou Grouza, Cleveland Browns. I was watching 3-4 games a week-end and fast forwarding. Haven’t watched a game this year and don’t miss oit. Why watch anything that is so insulting to my value of patriotism and appreciation for this great country. I notice the 9ers gave an award to the guy whom was insulting me the most. I don’t need any of this and I found better entertainment.

This weekend’s games were largely ruined by the slew of QB injuries in December, at least on the AFC side. The Raiders went from a clear-cut #2 team with a bye to a terrible team when Carr got hurt. KC leap-frogged them to get a bye-week. With Carr, this weekend’s game would have been Houston vs KC or vs Miami. Miami lost Tannahill which would have made them more competitive, and the Titans crashed once Mariota when down with the leg. They might have edged into the playoff and been competitive. The AFC side was doomed from those injuries. As 2-3 teams became less than play-off caliber overnight.

The NFC surprised a little bit. Both NY and Detroit were less than inspiring with missed opportunities and dropped catches. Not yet ready for for contention on either side, I suppose.
