“... everything, was held together with duct tape.”

Oh man that is funny.

I recall once where the other guy was driving stopped at a place that didn’t look the greatest.

“I don’t care - as long as it’s got a shower.”

The place was okay, except when I turned on the shower it ran rusty. After 10 minutes like that I figured it wasn’t going to clear up. I just had to laugh, that was all I was looking forward to was getting clean. I did have diaper wipes in the truck so I could clean up a bit.

All of that said - taking the off-beaten path and stopping at some of the dives along the way DOES provide the most memories of a trip. As long as the memories don’t include diahrea or bedbugs.

When we would do roadtrips with the kids we would go on the off beaten trail. Once went about 200 miles on dirt roads going to Las Vegas. There were some old volcanic cones and an old fort along the way. The fort was cool - still some walls, crop fields surrounding it, and an old wood sign saying what it was. It probably saw 20 tourists a year.

“I got stuck in caliche with my RX-7. “

Not many people even know what calichi is let alone got stuck in it. How did that happen?

Drinking beer. Walked Maricopa Rd to GB and got a tow driver.

I ended up giving that car to the tow guy as they were good friends of mine.

79 model 4bbl aspirated, no dents and ran pretty good. Fun to drive and hard to find.

And if you go to West, just outside of Waco, don’t forget to stop by The Czech Stop for some kolaches.

They also have Opa's Summer Sausage...the best!

And if you are in the Fredericksburg area, try out some of their wines. Some of them are pretty good.

There are several excellent wineries in Lubbock. Whenever we travel to El Paso, we stop at Llano Estacado, south of Lubbock. You can restock your wine stocks at a very reasonable price. I found their Riesling to be as good as a high quality German spatlese.

Also west of Amarillo is Adrian, home to the Midpoint Café. On the original Route 66, it is the exact midway point between Chicago and Santa Monica.

Yes it does. It also inspires you to lift some toilet seats and flush with your foot.

And that off beaten trail. A friend who lived in Yuma was showing me around town and pointed out what he told me was the old Yuma prison. It was outside of town and hewn out of the rock. A whole new insight into Old West Justice

And I only saw the entrance from the outside. What is on that video is all new to me.

I flush with paper in hand. No way I am touching a handle that just wiped its ass.

Sounds like an overnight stay in Marble Falls is necessary for this trip. Arrive in time for lunch, then dinner, then breakfast. And my personal Bluebonnet favorite is the lemon meringue pie. You should, though, always have what you prefer.
