WORD FOR THE DAY: APOPEMPTIC
2000 Most Challenging and Obscure Words | 1/18/17 | Norman Schur

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

apopemptic,/I> [ap uh PEMP tik]

hear it pronounced

adjective

Apopemptic describes anything addressed to one departing, whether spoken or sung, a farewell message, a valedictory.

It is from Greek apopemptikos (pertaining to ending away), based on prefix apo- (away) plus pempein (to send).

The advice of Polonius to his son Laertes in Shakespeare's Hamlet (Act I, Scene 3) is one of the most eloquent (apopemptic) speeches in literature.

"...To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the day the night that thou canst not then be false to any man...."

describes messages to, rather than from, those takiing their leave. Thus it does not apply to a farewell address but rather to those who comment on such an address.

I plan on delaying my morning ritual so I can have an apopemptic dump on Friday at 11:59 am (EST).

Here is a wonderful opportunity to send an apopemptic message to soon to be departing Obama and clan. Send him your very best wishes.
Grades will be given on the quality of the message (parting shot) and the proper use of the WFTD.

Francis is making traditional catholics apopemptic with his vague and contradictory public statements.

Protestants are just apopemptic in general.

An apopemptic ode to what’s his name.
Yeah, him.

A final farewell,
A fond adieu,
We send you off
To never return.

Our time has been spent
In harrowing contempt.
Our joys have been few
Our grief deep blue.

Should we never hear again
The cadenced rhythm of your voice,
Our satisfaction will be complete.

Begone then, my wastrel friend
And never darken the door of my heart again.

My apopemptic message to Barack Hussein is brief, as my mother advised: “if you can’t say anything nice . . . .”

An Apopemtic to the Departing

Thou knave, thou jackanapes, goodbye
And take with thee thine sullen brood
Back to the loop upon the shore
Where steel and powder mixeth nightly
Be thou gone! And take thy paintings of thyself,
All thine rap singers galore
Thy clubs of golf, and fashions unsightly.
But take only that which is thine, not more.
Wert thou on fire, I would not spit on thee.
Get thee hence, and don’t let the door hit thee
In that tender spot where the Good Lord split thee.

I am apoplectic that anyone would suggest a laudatory apopemptic for Obama.
