One of the amazing things about Shyamalan is his ability to make you believe in a plot that when you afterwards think about it you realize was completely absurd. Signs, for example, has aliens for whom water is poisonous cross the galaxy to invade a planet and kidnap creatures whose composition is 70% H2O. And having the technology necessary to cross said galaxy they are defeated by a locked door, a baseball bat, and a glass of water. Despite all that, the filming and editing sent thrills and chills down the spines of the audience, and left them cheering "Yeah, Merrill, swing away!". That kind of suspension of disbelief is brilliant. And he appears to enjoy working with Conservative actors since besides featuring Mel Gibson in the above, two of his best, Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, starred Bruce Willis.
