NATURE'S BEAUTY Waves transform Russian seaside from a dumping ground for alcohol bottles into a colourful ‘pebble beach’ The Ussuri Bay used to be a dumping ground for old glass bottles and waste from a porcelain factory but the waves from the Pacific Ocean have rounded and polished the debris left behind.... Dumped glass on Ussuri Bay in Russia has been shaped into colourful pebbles Tourists of all ages are amazed by the shining shore, clean water and splendid view.

The beach is particular spectacular in winter when the snow highlights the vivid colours of the glass.

The day I realized the actual origin of most sea glass, a bit of my innocence died.

At the Hole n" the Rock south of Moab, UT, the proprietors sold "desert glass" which was made in much the same manner of which you speak. Rock tumbler and broken (green) Coke and (brown) beer bottles.

There is a lady in my neighborhood who is really into collecting sea glass. She goes quite often to the beach and collects sea glass.

Notice that you don’t see any shore birds one would normally see oceanside.

Maybe the photographer scared them off.

“The bit about the van breaking down near an intersection, the driver going out into the grass, picking up a spare part that fit, putting it in and them driving away is particularly funny.”

That is quite a hook!
Pulled me right in, of all the old cars my kinfolk and I ,squeezing the last drop from...
A tale like that has to be good!
My local library does not have it, but available used and shipped for $4!

“just how miserable life is there”:
I suspect that the culture pushes the myth about how hard the life is.
Is it really, “Better in the Bahamas”?

Maybe a setup by the driver, to give his tourist something to write about?

If you mean post 8, I don't know. Will have to see if I can find the source again.

Maybe?
But I have heard of many family outings and how they made home.
A favorite is the one where a rod let go, someone pulls them into town, they put a bob weight (counterbalance) on the crank and drove off into the sunset. Circa 1950’s

I called BS!
My uncle produced a JC Whitney catalog listing the bob weights for sale!!!

From a long line out of the Scottish Highlands...

Don't yet know where that other photo was taken, but this one below is supposedly from a place in Montana called Pebbles Beach.

Hard to believe these are natural stones with all of those wild colors.

Naw, this was out in the middle of Siberia. 100 miles from no where. 1000 miles from where they started from.

It’s a great book and an interesting history. Gets into the WHY of the Siberian Exiles, Gulags, and the “Road of Bones”.
