Leaked video shows new ‘nightmare-inducing’ wheeled robot from Boston Dynamics

The company’s new wheeled, upright robot is named Handle (“because it’s supposed to handle objects”) and looks like a cross between a Segway and the two-legged Atlas bot. Handle hasn’t been officially unveiled, but was shown off by company founder Marc Raibert in a presentation to investors. Footage of the presentation was uploaded to YouTube by venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson.

Raibert describes Handle as an “experiment in combining wheels with legs, with a very dynamic system that is balancing itself all the time and has a lot of knowledge of how to throw its weight around.” He adds that using wheels is more efficient than legs, although there’s obviously a trade-off in terms of maneuvering over uneven ground

Trying to build a useful humanoid robot is sort like alchemy in the search to transform lead into gold. It just may not be possible, but like alchemy increased our knowledge of chemistry this will advance our knowledge of what will or will not work.

I think the trend will be to design individual robots to meet a specific need. There are many electrical devices found in a kitchen but I don’t think it would be an improvement to combined them all into one massive unit: Refrigerator/toaster/oven/mixer/microwave and so on.

Individual computers (or more likely smart phones) already perform many of the functions robots were to perform in the future. They can keep track of our contacts, dates, appointments and countless other things. Plus, it (the phone) allows you to contact with almost anyone in the world that has the technology. Not only voice, but visual. Eat your heart out Dick Tracy.

The predictors of the past were really thinking a robot would be a butler/maid/secretary because society was accustom to those professions. But do people today want a butler/maid/secretary? I don’t think so.

The robot of the future will not look like a robot. It will just be a continuation of the way things are going. A smart home and smart vehicle and a smart phone and smart appliances all communicating with each other.

I can see a business that will come in and do all the programming for you to set this up and from that point on it would begin to “learn” about you and will begin to anticipate your wants, needs and desires.

Thankfully I will be dead before then. ;)
