A Swiss International Air Lines flight made an unexpected landing in Iqaluit Wednesday due to a technical problem. The Boeing 777, carrying 216 passengers and 17 crew members, was en route to Los Angeles from Zurich.

On Google maps, it looks like a nice long runway with lots of X’s painted on it.
Looks like the ultimate ETOPS destination. “Engines Turn or Passengers Swim” or something like that.
Now there’s a place that one doesn’t hear about all that often......

Saw a huge 4-engine (Airbus A340?) Swissair on approach to OAK this afternoon. Heavy cloud cover, low ceiling, rain started 4:30 p.m.

I’ve flow Swiss Air quite a number of times. Great airline. An engine out is a rare, but sketchy, event on a 777. In mid-flight it should be as safe as this event . . . on take-off? Not so much.
Yikes, that would have freaked me out. Been on that flight many times.

That’s common Airframe & Powerplant tech talk indicating the engine is FUBAR.
In that situation, it’s best to land ASAP.
“I Qaluit!” is how an airplane engine says “I quit!” in Inuit.
Sunrise 7:55 AM. Sunset 3:42 PM. Not much daylight for a tour.
