The latest Apple/Mac/iOS Pings can be found by searching Keyword "ApplePingList" on FreeRepublic's Search.

Is the bokeh in the cover photo really from the iPhone 7?
Now lets see Boobboard Magazine. Nah Apple probably puts a boob filter on it.
I thought the iphone 7 was ‘The Exploder’. There have been numerous videos showing what happens when your cell phone suddenly bursts into flames and sharp edged flying fragments.
I guess Apple’s check cleared.
Sure is. . . Portrait mode.
Uh, no, that was the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. They were all recalled and cost Samsung over $18 billion in lost revenue and costs. The iPhones are safe, with a battery failure rate consistent with the failure of all Lithium Ion batteries of about 1 in 10 million.
I still like my GH4. The GH5 might happen later.
There have been scattered reports of exploding Iphone 7s
Google it.
I use a 1957 Leica M3 DS with a Summicron Version 5 and Velvia.
But I’m a conservative.
None of these articles ever mention the technical underpinnings of Portrait Mode. How is it better than ‘regular mode’? More pixels? Better Gamma?
Technically speaking, what exactly is there to “portrait mode” beside focus and resolution? Is there some special processing involved.
In other words if I took the same picture with a galaxy 7 with similar specs would one be able to tell the difference?
That’s the comparison I’d like to see otherwise it’s just hype.
Oftentimes, clients request photo resolutions far greater than the iPhone 7 Plus’ 12 megapixels.
My Nokia 950XL has 20 megapixels.
What’s the big deal?

The hype is the iPhone 7’s ability to focus on the subject while the background is out of focus.
Smartphone cameras have difficulty producing this due to physical limitations of their lens and sensor.
Google “Bokeh” for a more detailed explanation.
Don't have to Google it. There have been ZERO "exploding" iPhone 7s, but there have been some that have either overheated or caught fire, in line with the normal failure rate of Lithium Ion batteries of 1 in 10,000,000. Since Apple has sold over 150,000,000 iPhone 7s since they were introduced, the expected number that would have caught fire would be approximately 15 or so. That is what you will find in a Google search is the reports of those 15. . . Certainly not the 1 in ~2500 failure rate the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was experiencing due to poor manufacturing processes and tolerances inside their case for battery expansion during fast charging.
Notice in the photo of the cover of the magazine how everything in the background of the model is completely out of focus? In a normal photograph, everything beyond the focal plane will be in focus. However in Portrait mode, the MODEL is what the photographer wants the viewer to pay attention to, not the background, so the point is to de-emphasize the background. A normal lens system will be able to resolve everything beyond a specific distance. . . But not things closer than what you are focusing on.
So, background blur is introduced due to some sophisticated digital image processing. Thanks for the info, I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
I think android and iphone cell phones take great closeup photos. They just do not have enough detail for anything past 20 feet where you start seeing the pixels. Most photos are within that range so I figure that is why the lens and the sensor chip have not gotten any bigger except for a few models.

Why an iPhone will never replace my DSLR

Photos taken by iPhone - Could be any camera with small chip. Most good but look at the bigger photos and note the blurriness.

What I like about my LG3 is the camera takes great photos with no fuss where my bigger camera I have to fuss with the settings.
My GH4 does very nice photos, even in the idiot modes. I mainly bought it for 4K video.
