The process from the traditional custard pie was modified into a recipe for the appetizing and flavorful banana cream pie. Now there are many variations in thousands of recipes for this yummy pie and recipes for banana cream pie can be found in recipe books dating back into the 19th century.

Banana cream pie was ranked the number one favorite dessert among the soldiers of the United States Armed Services in the 1950s.

My favorite banana cream pie story was told by an older man who many years before was with his father, who loved banana cream pie, for a lengthy train trip to visit an elderly lady relative.

Before they left to return home, she offered them a good meal, with banana cream pie for dessert. The dinner was fine, but the pie didn’t look quite right to the son, so he declined a serving.

“Well, fine,” said his father. “More for me.” And then he ate more than half the pie.

The train had just left the station when the father felt a sudden, strong inclination to go to the toilet. Where he stayed for the duration of the trip, giving off periodic and mournful loud groans, and generating an impressively bad odor, which led other passengers to crack their windows despite it being cold out.

Somewhat the worse for wear, he had little to say for the car ride home. But in a cruel epilogue, the father was greeted by his wife, who had prepared for her husband and son a sumptuous meal of pork ribs and sauerkraut with dumplings, and for dessert, banana cream pie.
