FULL TITLE: Honor student, 17, is struck by freight train and loses both feet after lying down with legs draped over the tracks

A 17-year-old Georgia high school senior has lost both his feet after being struck by a freight train in suburban Atlanta.

Lilburn Police Captain Thomas Bardugon say the victim, identified as Jacob Ohl, was lying alongside the train tracks near Shelly Lane with his feet draped over the rail when he was struck by a northbound CSX train at 1pm Thursday.

It took the locomotive between half a mile and three quarters of a mile to stop after the accident.

Train crews are required to have any and all personal electronic devices turned off and stowed away while on duty.

About 30 years ago I knew a retired train engineer.... and told me that the reality is that anyone ever hit by a train is at fault

I'd never place any blame on the engineer, but sometimes a big share of the blame lies with a railroad employee that inadvertantly causes a failure in the warning lights and the arms that drop down to block the road crossing the track. If a warning device is in place at a location and works almost every time, people learn to rely on it. If it fails to deploy it's practically never because of some "act of God". It's because some guy doing maintenance messed up.

According to a GoFundMe page created by a family friend, Ohl underwent surgery on Thursday to clean his wounds and finish the amputation on the damaged portions of his legs below the knee.

GoFundMe?

WOW. They are sure out there with their hands out fast enough.

What money grubbers.

No, my point was that he told me that man people died being hit by his train, but he’d conditioned himself that he could never be at fault. It was virtually always the driver or pedestrian at fault.

Oh, I dunno. It’s not a complicated call. Place a couple tourniquets, recover the feet, and transport. Start an IV if you want. Manage the pain, consider a sedative, monitor his vital signs.

Possible psychotic break...possible depreesion...possible psychotropic drug use...possible 17 year old male bravado...possible attention seeking....possible suicide attempt...I think the article quoted him as saying that he didnt want to hurt himself...so a very mixed up kid nonetheless

We played around TRESTLES.

Yeah, back in the day I used to cross a trestle over a river a couple of times a summer. This was actually a Boy Scout thing. Some of us got seriously into hiking. One of our natural point-to-points had this dang river in the way. It had, of course, a quite convenient trestle. We took care to take care. Still not the smartest thing I've ever done, but good memories. It was fun at the time.

I remember dear ole Dad telling me stories about hiring engineers. My favorite was “That PhD doesn’t know which end of a hammer to pick up.”

“With in 24 hours the dad in this story had a gofundme up for his son. Some in the comment section on Daily Mail’s site find this odd.”

Quite - most of his dad’s generation don’t even know that gofundme exists. The kid was out cold during those 24 hours.

Sounds like me to be a gimmick to pay for college, although if I were in dad’s shoes, I would have chosen to keep-the-feet and settled for a state college instead.
