Lockheed is building a commercial blimp to re-supply oil fields in Alaska.
My kids grew up driving by the blimp’s “house. “ It was often pressed into service over the port after 9/11. We love that blimp. Plus the great exchange in Naked Gun.

Akron, eh? It’s eerie when they’re low flying at night without the big footlights on to illuminate the Goodyear logo. You can barely make out the giant form, moving so slowly it seems like an alien mother ship is hovering over you. Then the sound of the engines and props make you realize it’s just the blimp.
VoC flew a radio control blimp at CPAC a few years ago!
We had a lot of fun with it.
Dirigibles are fascinating. There was a Navy dirigible called the Akron. The dirigible Los Angles has famous photos of it doing a headstand at tether in heavy winds. The tower at the top of the Empire State building was supposed to serve as an airship tether and the uppermost floors were meant as an airship terminal and point of embarkment and disembarkment. (I think they accomplished that feat one time and then judged it too dangerous to ever do again.)
A relative works for Goodyear and has taken rides in the blimp. It is an amazing experience, according to him. I wonder if the new version will change the sound it makes in flight.
…Okay, so no airship docking ever took place at the Empire State Building. It was talked about and a few dirigibles and blimps made close passes to see if could be done. Ultimately, it was judged both too dangerous and impractical to do.
