NOTHING is intuitive, EVERYTHING is different, NOTHING is easy. I stuck with it for 7 months and went and bought a new Windows box.

Better don your flame suit. Mac fanboys will be along to, well, flame you...

When 7 doesn’t work anymore I see an Apple in my future. We tried 10 and gave up even trying to work it.

Yep. I got tired of Win 10 real fast and after some soul searching bought an iMac. I have an old Mac that works fine, but is no longer updatable so I spent the bucks for the new Mac
I have been a pc user since 1981 and know (knew) a fair amount about using and customizing the system, but with 10 I was just annoyed enough to make the change.
For those pc programs I have to run I installed Parallels 12 and win7. This may be my last gasp in windows after 36 years.

Proud to be a user of MSFT’s last and greatest operating system, Windows 7. All else is telemetric uselessness.

> ...Then don’t get a Mac! I’ve been computing since DOS with floppies and an 8088 CPU. I was a DOS mechanic an am a certified UNIX admin. I was pissed at Windows so got a Mac. NOTHING is intuitive, EVERYTHING is different, NOTHING is easy. I stuck with it for 7 months and went and bought a new Windows box. If you learned on a Mac, I’m sure it’s different, but it’s not great for this old PC operator.

With all respect, I have a similar history to yours (here if you're curious) and what I've learned about the differences between a Mac and either Windows or Linux is that with a Mac, the more you know about the inner workings of computers, the harder it is to get your mind wrapped around how the Mac does things.

I have to constantly tell myself: "Stop thinking about what's going on in the computer. Just clear your mind and think about what you want to do. The Mac expects you to just do that, not think of how you'd do it with a handful of chips and a compiler."

That's why, in my opinion, Macs are generally better for non-geek types. But as you say, for us geek types, we have to stop thinking like we understand how it works, and just think of what we want to do.

Of course, YMMV, but that's been my experience, personally and with other technical and non-tech types.

Incidentally, FrogMom, since you (like me) are basically a UNIX-style person, the fact that a Mac is real BSD UNIX underneath (albeit with a glitzy GUI on top), makes it a very familiar and quite useful machine, even if all you do is open up xterms and other X11 apps on the desktop. Other than an email client and a browser, I'd say 90+% of my work on my Mac is done at the commandline, using UNIX commands. It's a very robust UNIX environment; sorta reminds me of working on my Ultrix workstation back in the early 90's.

I have rsync and find and chmod and gcc and make and whatever editor I feel like, automount NFS and SMB network drives, authenticate with NIS or LDAP, run Apache 2.4 as a webserver...

UNIX is the best there is, IMO. Not that the UNIX is justification for buying a Mac -- there are cheaper ways to get a commandline. Just sayin' :-)

There should be a class action suit brought against Microsoft.

I’m bummed out. I will need lots of meds when 7 crashes and leave me without a puter.

Mandatory castration for all Microsoft programmers. We should don’t need another generation of them.

The update is free for Win10 users. Win10 itself now costs you real money.

Hi Dayglored,

Ran across the below post from some guy a couple of days ago on another site. Just wanted to get feedback from a respected FR techie. What is your opinion on this guy's statement that Windows 10 is still available for free?

And thanks for all your do with the WindowsPingList. BTW, please add me to the list. Thanks!

-------------------------

"Why are people paying for windows 10 when Microsoft is still giving it away for free?

I have successfully rolled Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 computers up to Windows 10 by using the Microsoft installation tool that you get directly from Microsoft's website. I have done this multiple times since they stopped offering the "get windows 10 for free" promotion. This will work just as long as you have a valid license key from your previous windows 7, 8, or 8.1 installation. It is also perfectly legal to reassign a windows key from say on old laptop to a new one just as long as it is used only one time. This only works with Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 licenses. You can use Microsoft's tool to then upgrade the computer to Windows 10 only after the older operating system is properly licensed by Microsoft. You will then get a new Windows 10 license directly from Microsoft that is exclusive to the computer you upgraded. You must do the upgrade in the fashion I describe or it will not work."

His proposed method for scamming a free install of Win10 sounds, well, "damned unlikely" is a kind way to put it.

It might have worked once or twice due to some fluke he doesn't recognize -- after all, no authentication system is flawless. I don't see how it circumvents Microsoft's activation mechanism, especially since Win8 (not 8.1) is completely ineligible for upgrade to Win10, and wasn't eligible even when the upgrade was free. Something smells.

Unless he can provide some demonstrable proof of it working, I consider it just hearsay. Unfortunately it's very difficult to provide such proof without doing it in person. Talk is cheap, and YT videos can be faked, etc.

Color me VERY skeptical.
