“angles and dangles”

That sounds terrifying.
Dangles, yikes.

If its a ship with Marines aboard, that maneuver is called the “Mess with the Marines” maneuver.

If no Marines aboard, that maneuver is called the “Lets See if Everything is Stowed Properly” maneuver.

I’m not now, nor was I ever, a squid so I could be wrong.

Actually, it’s port. During the initial couple of seconds the ship heels in the direction of the turn, but then shifts to the opposite side of the turn.
On the bridge we notify all stations ‘Turn to Port’ and they announce locally ‘Heel to Starboard’ for the folks driving the yellow gear and working on aircraft.

Picture reminded me of final battle scene in the movie Battleship (2012). Fake but I still loved those guns blazing.

And old timers great line, “let’s drop some lead on those mothers”

I believe that is called the “Let’s see what is not strapped down” maneuver.

They test everything, Full speed “hard to port” and Full speed “Hard to Starboard” is part of the process. And full speed for those big ships is quite stunning.

Full speed, would you believe 60 knots? The Enterprise could turn on a dime at attack speed. Did it by reversing props on one side, with full speed ahead on the other side of the ship.

Anybody ever been on board for a Crash Stop? THAT is fun. You go from Flank Speed to Zero in a mile. The engines groan like they’re going to burst and you better damn well hold on.

When Princeton came out of FRAM-II overhaul in 1961, our Sea Trials consisted of Full Speed Run, Hard to Port and Hard to Starboard Turns, Flank Speed and Crash Stop. When they announced the start, everybody held on. We passed with flying colors. Not bad for a 16-year-old Essex class carrier with a half crew and half of them Marines.

Don’t know if it is true or not, but these ships would capsize if they exceeded 33 degree list. Princeton got to a 25 degree list.

HA! You should experience “Angles-and-Dangles” on a nuke submarine! ;-)

I just watched a documentary about the Kentucky and that was the first time I ever heard of that. I laughed when they said it was to find rattles including iPods and screw drivers etc that were loose.

LOL that’s me. I’m getting sick from looking at the still shot. Everyone else in my family but me loves the ocean. Mom worked at philly naval base on the carriers. Bro was on a sub for a bit. Uncle in Merchant Marines at 15. I like driving...my jeep.

The Russians and Chinese have been developing “carrier killer” missiles, and hopefully will not get a chance to try them out on this fleet.

Yes, they do test the carriers like that.
But they also remove the aircraft from the deck first. And tie down everything in the hanger deck (forklifts, cranes, storage, ....)
At full speed, the aircraft carriers do squat down by the stern just like a power boat.
