Earth Faces an Increased Risk of Being Hit by an Asteroid, Astronomers Warn

Czech astronomers have tracked a new branch of the stream from which particles are intersecting with the planet. The branch includes two asteroids with diameters of between 200 and 300 meters (roughly 650-1000 feet). These asteroids are not themselves on a collision course with Earth, but their identification suggests that there may be other asteroids of this size or larger lurking undiscovered within this stream.

...

The debris stream from Comet Encke is influenced in part by the gravity of Jupiter, a massive gas giant planet that is known to influence the orbits of comets and asteroids in that region of the solar system. As such, from time Jupiter’s gravity can redirect the debris so that more particles hit the Earth.

During one of these “enhanced” Taurid meteor showers in 2015 caused by Encke’s redirection, the astronomers from the Czech Academy of Sciences analyzed 144 Taurid fireballs — meteors that produce a large flash when they hit the atmosphere. Observations were taken from the European Fireball Network.

Of the analyzed fireballs, about 113 of them have common characteristics, including sharing approximately the same orbit. The astronomers concluded, based on previous showers, that these fireballs come from a new branch of the Taurid stream being redirected by Jupiter’s gravity.

Next, the astronomers analyzed the orbital paths of asteroids 2015 TX24 and 2005 UR. Due to their similarities to the newly discovered path of the Taurid fireballs, the astronomers in turn argued that these two asteroids — each about 200-300 meters in diameter — are also members of the new branch.

Analysis of the fireballs suggests that the large asteroids are weak in structure, although at larger sizes they would not break up easily in the Earth’s atmosphere.

I hope a meteor hits Mecca.

Islam is such an evil religion.

Quran 4:89 Have no unbelieving friends. Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them.

Yes, for actual risk to increase the earth would have to expand, switch orbits, have stronger gravity, or the number of asteroids would have to mysteriously increase. Of course all these violate various natural laws.

This is unlike allowing muslims into any country on earth, which does increase the risk of terrorist incidents.

I hope it wasn’t something I did.

No problem...move the planet. Or can we at least direct a small asteroid to-say-Mecca??They DO like space rocks!

How is the same risk as yesterday, today and tomorrow an increased risk?

Islam is such an evil religion.

Islam is not a religion. It is a totalitarian socio-political system masquerading as a religion.

The Shahada, the Muslim profession of faith, if truly spoken would be as follows:
There is no Allah but Satan, and Muhammad was his murdering pedophile.

Until we recognize it as such and remove its first amendment protection we will be at its mercy, of which there will be none.

There is no “increased” risk. What has increased is our perception of risk.

In my opinion, the actual risk is the same as it's always been. As you've said, the perception of risk has changed. This could be because technology has provided us with an increased ability to identify objects in space that could pose a potential risk to us. In years past, the risk was there, we were just oblivious to it because we didn't have the ability to detect it.

Why aren’t hemorrhoids called asteroids?

Oh...climate didn’t work! So now, our impending doom will be asteroids. How convenient.

Unfortunately, astronomers aren't just scaremongering for research dollars, like the AGW crowd. The threats they're warning about, are all too real.

Revelation clearly tells us that the day will come when God will destroy this Earth Andrey make it into the perfect world he originally intended it to be. So why worry about climate change asteroids or anything else? God is going to do what his perfect plan is and no liberal in this world can stop him.

I look forward to the day when I can dwell with God and all his children on his remade, perfect Earth.
