We used to have this cat who had a mottled color. She was not pretty but had some beautiful kittens.

One day I checked in on her in our barn. I knew she had some kittens and just wanted to play with them. When I saw her I was a little surprised.

She had a dead rat, a stunned mouse which she was letting the kittens play with and a dead coral snake.

I almost stepped on a copperhead several years ago. Had a coral snake crawl across the path in front of me a couple of months ago. The bad news about coral snakes is that their bites are so rare that antivenom is very rare. Basically if you get bit by one, they make sure you don’t go into resperatory failure until you get over the bite.

Milk snakes are also in the king snake family, not the biggest but they will easily eat the juvenile vipers. The black rat snake is also a type of king snake. They will also eat good size vipers and they get up to 8 feet.

About 20 years ago I went to a national conference for work. One of the workshops was conducted by a couple. I’ll never forget the woman introducing themselves “...and this is my life partner, Bob.”

It was over for me after that. I spent the entire session rolling my eyes and inwardly mocking them and my fellow attendees who took them seriously.

I wonder if they are still “life partners “ or if a relationship without vows before God ended up not being for life.

Yes, that's a subject I never broached with her or my mom. My sister wasn't working (through no fault of her won, God bless her), she was living with her boyfriend at the time and he didn't have a pot to piss in, much less insurance, so I'm not sure how the medical expenses were dealt with.

Correct, about 5 deaths per year. 1/4 of all bites are “dry”, no venom injected.
Most people are bitten on the hands and arms; trying to catch or hold the snake. Men 18-25 get bite the most often and consumption of alcohol often plays a role.
By the person, snakes tend to be sober.

What the hell? They never looked at the marks?

One you dont want to mess with is the Mohave Green. I have killed quite a few around here. They will come after you. They are 17 times more toxic than a sidewinder. They have both types of venom. Hemo toxins and neuro toxins.

The fact is that people often mistake small western diamondbacks for Mohave Greens.

“When people say partner I assume they are gay. But in other countries they often are not.”

Same here...and for Europe, they consider themselves ‘beyond (the outdated) institution of marriage’, and therefore always use ‘partner’. Unfortunately for them, the Muslims still believe in marriage.

How would you not know you were struck by a rattlesnake?

If it was dark, how would she know it was a copperhead and not some other snake? Did she see it bite her?

Your post scared me.
There’s one section in my garden where there are snakes. I took a photo and noticed that there are three different kinds. I haven’t identified them yet but they sure looked fat.

I’ll be wearing cowboy boots from now on.

If victim came in and said he had been bitten by a snake

I recall reading that almost all snake bite victims in the U.S. are people who were handling snakes. I strongly suspect he was handling the snake and did not want to admit it to the doctors, or his wife.

It’s a big leap from noting that “carrying a snake bite first aid kit is a good idea” to declaring someone who has died of a snakebite, despite having gone to the hospital, a “fool”.

I live on a lake in Texas, and every spring water moccasins come out on my patio to warm up. I’m sure they get very warm when I send them to their eternal reward.

On average, about five people per year die from snake bites in the United States, mostly rattlers but copperheads, corals and mambas as well.

Mambas???? We have mambas in the US? I thought those were in Africa? Islands? Are these in zoos? Inquiring minds want to know. thanks!

They know what it was because they located and killed the little sucker within a few hours of her getting snacked on.
