Most people don’t know it, but at age 17 Maude quit his senior year of high school, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served two and a half years in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
The greatest generation, indeed.

Gladys Knight
The late great Donna Summer
Chi Coltrane, IMO one of the most underrated female singer/songwriters in history. She only had one big hit in the US,
Thunder and Lightning, but what a hit it was!

"Of all time" is way too big a claim for anyone to claim, in my opinion. Some female vocalists I like a great deal are Tracy Thorne, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Liz Frazier...couple of those ladies worked with Massive Attack, come to think of it. If they worked with Massive Attack, odds are they have great voices.
And I'll always be a fan of Karen Carpenter's voice. Not a fan of many of those songs she sang, but that voice was pure.

Janis Joplin is an outstanding choice. Of the women from my generation, (60’s & 70’s), she is there with Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt. Janis is the only one I did not see perform live. She would have been great.
