While jogging on a familiar, overgrown, wooded trail near her home on a recent warm afternoon, Rachel Borch thought to herself, “what a beautiful day.”

Little did she know she was about to be attacked by a rabid raccoon she would end up killing with her bare hands.

All the more reason to carry a gun. Lot safer than killing a rabid animal with your hands.

The dead raccoon was retrieved by Borch’s dad, who packed it into a Taste of the Wild dog food bag and handed it over to the Maine Warden Service.

Hope Animal Control Officer Heidi Blood confirmed Wednesday that the dead raccoon later tested positive for rabies by the Maine Center for Disease Control.

Truth in packaging.

About 25 years ago, I was leaving to work in Florida at 4 AM, and as I left my apartment, there was at least a 70lb raccoon in my path.

I did a stare down, and the animal backdowned, but my heartbeat was going triple time.

I was once bit by an opossum. The doctor told me rabies risk was rare...most of the local (Kansas) opossums were rabies free...but the raccoons, oh the raccoons - watch out for them, the whole lot of them are rabid.

Drowning in water, that’s a rabids animal’s worst fear.

it wasn’t raqbid then, you can’t stare down a rabid animal- they are nuts- and lose all fear but yes- racoons are very vicious animals- you don’t wanna tangle with one-

Is it possible that Ms. Borch’s jogging activity has caused a poisoned atmosphere...I mean I don’t squarely put all of the blame on her, but maybe she caused the stark raving mad rabid raccoon to attack.

Drowning in water, that’s a rabids animal’s worst fear.

Practically a phobia.

I think he was being funny FRiend - I think it was the 70lb. part that was the clue ;)
The biggest we have here in Georgia probably weigh a good 30lbs, but darn sure look like 40-50 :)

And yes - definitely a critter best viewed from a far.

Is she missing her right arm in that picture??? It looks like that to me. A one-armed woman takes on a rabid raccoon and drowns it!

will get arrested by Maine Dept of Wildlife for harming the raccoon out of season and/or their Ecology Dept for messing up wetlands. It’s a race to see which first!

I saw this on Twitter yesterday. What a bizarre story. Between the deer ticks spreading Lyme disease and the rabid animals, I am getting afraid of the woods.
