Nixon also:

Instituted the first federal Affirmative Action program.

Imposed wage and price controls.

Appointed three justices that gave us Roe vs. Wade (The only Kennedy justice on the Supreme Court at the time dissented from Roe v. Wade)

Dramatically increased spending on federal employees.

1976 -— Reagan wins and gets a non establishment VP (many fixes all at once, no Carter and no establishment in the President and VP spots)

Reagan already picked Schweiker who was from the liberal wing of the party.

Most likely, Reagan couldn't have won. The Nixon thing was too recent and voters needed to get really sick of Carter to take a chance on Reagan.

But say Reagan had won. Wouldn't he have gotten bogged down in the whole Seventies malaise? Inflation, gas shortages, Iran.

1992. And then our problems began.

The one to change would be 1964. Johnson’s Great Society is the source of many evils.

You wanted Humphrey to defeat Nixon?

Good question. Humphrey would have been a feeble, ineffective president. There wasn't much he'd be able to do with a divided party and half the country against him. Would it have been better to let him cope with the mess until the country threw him out in the next election?

Unfortunately, the one I’d most like to change is outside your parameters: 1964. A Goldwater win makes us an entirely different (an din most ways, better) country today. +1

If Kerry had beaten Bush, we would have gotten a bumbling moron who would have been the candidate in 2008. Nobama. Of course, we’re done with Obama now and we would have had him looming, so I guess it all worked out as best as it could. But, Bush’s second term was a wreck at any rate.

Taft beats Eisenhower for the Republican nomination and wins the White House. Eisenhower was pretty much one of the first real figure heads placed into power for Internationalism.

1960. No communist Cuba after 1964, no Kennedy dynasty, no watergate scandal, no Vietnam War loss, no dixie-crat defection, no president Johnson, no Soviet Union after 1968, no Saddam Hussein, no fall of Iran, no Mujahideen, no Osama bin Laden, 9-11.

I don’t know. I think God had a plan through Reagan, Thatcher and JP2 that was more consequential for more people. So few times in history do a collection of just the right people emerge, who act toward very powerful results.

The 1976 election was a booby prize.

Whoever won would have been dealing with inflation, post-Watergate malaise, and the collapse of Iran. Those three things were simply not controllable.

I don’t think there is anything any president could have done with Iran in the big picture. Maybe there is not a hostage crisis, but the outcome of the revolution would have been the same.

The one big event of Carter’s reign (and I’m not trying to downplay the hostage crisis) is Afghanistan. Who knows if that happens with Reagan in office. But maybe Reagan is a crippled politician like Carter and the Soviets think they will be dealing with Ted Kennedy or John Glenn in 1981.
