After my surgery (and using opiates-no choice because of unbelievable pain) I used magnesium citrate every few days.

For occasional use, it's great. However magnesium citrate side effects: "If this product is used too frequently, it may cause loss of normal bowel function and an inability to have a bowel movement without using the product (laxative dependence)".

Blackstrap molasses. A couple of teaspoons in warm water or coffee. Repeat in a few hours if necessary. Lots of dark green leafy vegetables. Both great natural sources of magnesium. Oranges are good and so are bananas to provide potassium & fiber.
