A lot of scenes and elements in it are based on events that really happened. Hell, the small boat they used in the movie was THERE.
You should go see it. Not much dialogue. Lots of breaking things and loud noises. And the courage of the captains of the Little Boats can’t be denied, although the 50,000 bravest of the brave that dug in and fought until they were out of ammo and that lost their lives holding German ground forces off the beach so 330,000 could be rescued is a bit skimmed over. It’s a very strong reminder of the sense of duty and determination and sheer willpower and selflessness that has been the hallmark of Anglo-Saxon culture, so liberals will hate the movie.
