Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink) had a Jewish father and a Lutheran mother. He was born in Cologne in 1920.
His family emigrated to the US in 1935. If his parents hadn’t taken the family from Germany it is likely they would have ended up in one of the camps, never to be seen again.

Contrary to his mangling of the violin on HH he was a classically trained violinist and concert pianist.

Klemperer only agreed to take the role if he was allowed to portray Klink as a bumbling fool and that Klink was never to win against Hogan.
