A Ruger No. 1 single shot definitely has a place.
“..s the Single Shot Shotgun Still Relevant?...”
ANY gun is better than none, and better than none gets you a BETTER gun.
Example: Liberty pistol.
Still have my first hunting shotgun from 1959. Single shot 16 ga. WinChester in full choke .
A single shot 10 gage goose gun will scare the sh*t out of anyone you point it at.
On a drunken liberty in 1950s Havana and we took a wrong turn down the dock. The Maritime Cop yelled "ALTO!" and we heard the "snick' of the safety go off. He pointed his 7mm Mauser at me and that .28 cal looked like the open end of a garbage can. We yelled "AMERICANO!", did a "threes about" and skeedaddled, now stone sober.
I would the same effect would occur on anyone facing a shotgun, even a .410.
I still have one that was my first gun. It is a model 37 Winchester .410. My dad bought it used for $5.00 right after WWII. As a kid, I took out a lot of rabbits with it.
I have my granddad's Winchester 37, too - also in .410. It really needs to have the forcing cone lengthened to better cope with plastic hull shot shells, but I still drag it out at least once a year for a rabbit hunt. Quickest way I know to make 45 years seem to melt away.
That little gun has a stiff recoil, though. Almost enough to warrant a recoil pad. I hate to cut any length off of an original stock, though. It needs a reproduction buttplate, at least - the original one repeatedly gets a white oxidation film on it. Oddly, it seems to have shrunk with age - there's around 1/16" of the wooden buttstock showing around the edge of the plate. Apparently this is a known issue with those old plastic formulations.
I like the old scattergun - and knowing that both my dad and granddad winced at that recoil before I did.
Sawed off makes for great liquor store knock off.
It sure is relevant if it is pointed at you. I loved my Sears JC Higgens single shot 12 gauge. Light as a feather and kicked like a mule on crack.
I was ten years old when my Dad gave me my first shotgun; a break action, single shot 410. He told me he would buy me a pump gun when he decided I was good enough to hit the birds and rabbits with a single shot. He said with only one shot I would have to think and aim properly.
It worked and to this day I don’t think I have ever fired two rounds at my game. I have missed but I just don’t keep flinging lead everywhere.
I was ten years old when my Dad let me buy my first shotgun; a break action —— H & R TOPPER....Still have it..Hope I’m around long enuf 2 C grandson shoot it....
It’s just the CUTEST li’l thing you ever saw!!!! Brings a tear to me’ eyes (sniff, sniff)..
Perfect, custom made for popping Socialists and taking their firepower.
Like I said... ANY gun gets you a better gun.
Great utility gun.
I wonder if they still have that great barrel swap deal?
Its for the newer guns at any rate.
I have an NEF in 280 Remington.
I have a legal cut off double barrel loaded (00), broken and leaning against the wall in the corner of my office which is located in a bad part of town.
In a file drawer under “gun” I have a Mossburg Maverick. And, of course, the CC on my person.
Oh well. I do know a few smiths that do barrel stubbing.
