The NFL Is Seriously Concerned With Empty Stadiums
MSN ^ | September 13, 2017 | Ryan Phillips

Week 1 of the NFL season had plenty of important stories worth following, but maybe the most entertaining was the mostly empty stadiums in Los Angeles and Santa Clara. Both the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers had sparse crowds for their home openers, and that has not gone unnoticed by the NFL.

I used to watch 3-4 games a week. Now I'm down to watching "my team" and that is it. I was a hardcore football fan since I was young but several things have turned me off.

I'm the opposite of you. I missed the celebrations. It added some passion to the game and didn't make it look like the players were out there just going through the motions.

Feminization of the game. Female referees. Horrible female commentators. Dressing players up like newborn baby girls every year.

Endless commercials.

The injection of politics was the final straw for me. Sports are a form of escapism. I can turn my brain off and yell at the TV about missed holding penalties. I can't do that anymore. When the NFL begins losing fans like me, there is a problem. When people figure out that they don't need your product to survive, your company is doomed.

The article only mentions the California games, but the video clip embedded in it goes beyond that. In fact, the two guys (I think it's from "Mike & Mike" on the radio) point to one game in particular as an indication of a serious problem: empty seats at the Eagles-Redskins game in Washington.

The one guy correctly points out that empty seats should be a major cause for alarm in the NFL offices if you're seeing them at an opening game between those long-time NFC East rivals who play three hours apart from each other.

Cant stand all the damn commercials on the TV either. Nice weather in September-October more inviting for outdoor activities on Sundays.

They earn more in this horrible racist country than the people they are asking to buy their tribal gear. The NFL and most teams are completely Ok with protesting about how racist only white Americans are.

No one is afraid of white Americans hurting them in 2017. White Americans, including the 0.05% of white Americans belonging to racist organizations, are NOT a threat in the world / country today.

By publicly associating all whites with racism against blacks, the NFL deserves to lose money. If they are too stupid to put a stop to this, it’s their own fault.

If they need excuses other than CLEARLY WE HATE OUR RACIST FANS, the NFL should hire Hillary. She can come up with dumb excuses better than anyone else in the country.

I’ll take reruns of the 60s and 70s games with those Alcoa Fantastic Finish spots.

The Spanos are scum. SD won’t welcome them back and LA doesn’t want them. Rather than creating a $2 B franchise, the Spanos created one of half that value. Funny they started with a $1.6 B franchise.

Celebrating - it’s out of control. A guy tackles the RB in the backfield and he acts like they just won the game.

I call it the "Just saved the village from a rogue elephant" celebration.

Well, they likely need MORE anthem protests and politicial commentaries from their sports reporters and announcers. After all, that is why most people waste a Sunday afternoon watching those games, isn’t it?

[/s]

[Surely, they are not that clueless.]

This is like NASCAR.
Empty seat solution was to remove seats and adjust camera angles while running the identical looking and running cars round and round.

NFL will remove seats and adjust camera angles so you do not see the million dollar ‘slaves’ protesting.

In defense of the players in the NFL, there are some great people like Benjamin Watson in its ranks.

Exactly!
It just isn’t the same game I used to enjoy watching.
I see a couple of games a year now, and have trouble sitting
thought those.

I'd love to blame this all on CK and all the other misfits with their silly temper tantrum, but the article doesn't mention this because the empty seats really have nothing to do with that.

I'd say Kaepernick's greatest crime was that he reminded the fans they were already tired of the NFL. Surprised the owners haven't hired a hit man, yet. :)

60 minutes of football, with huddle time maybe 30 minutes of actual playing time, probably less.
So you watch actual action about 10 minutes an hour for 3 hours and with no relief that being at home and having the remote in your hands, why sit through the drudgery?
Take in the fact that most people spend up to 2 hours getting to stadium , parking and getting in, you are now at a 5-6 hour endeavor for basically 30 minutes of football action.
As others have spoken, the thug mentality, self adulation for making a tackle, and basic limited brain capacity of the NFL players, WHY?
The NFL should not be asking why not, but WHY?

Wait until the Raiders start playing to sparse crowds in Oakland and Las Vegas.

I think the Raiders will get good attendance in Las Vegas - but most of the fans will be flying in to watch the Raiders' opponent. :)
