Been using - and trusting, as well as recommending - CCleaner since its early days as 'CrapCleaner', and I keep it pretty well up-to-date on all of my machines.

So far, I've had the afflicted version on 3 of my systems, with several to check...

Rats.

Yes- I quoted the article myself and know which version they are referencing (which is not the version I have)but I am wondering if I should update anyway or skip it for now.

Thanks for posting, I use it but checked and haven’t updated for a couple months so should be OK.

Just my unsolicited two cents worth, but if your older unaffected version is working fine, I would hold off a week of two before getting the newest one. That's just my natural caution/paranoia regarding a new version of anything. I always wait just a bit to see if any kinks or flaws need to be discovered and remedied before I jump in.

Best of luck to you!

Just received a ‘Trojan/Nyetya’ from the Free CCleaner
V5-34.6207 (64) bit. On line Malwarebytes caught it. I uninstalled the Free version. Thought you would like to know.

I only run CCleaner occasionally. Both my laptop and desktop computers have versions older than the 5.333 version.

It does raise a question of how safe many of these ‘virus checker’ programs are, however.

Then, there is the Equifax debacle.

LOL, I didn't know that's how the name got started. :-)

"No, you don't need to update, but why not? It's free. "

Why not? For all thinking about updating, you might want to proceed VERY carefully, or you will wind up with your browser changed over to a virus- Chrome. I did not see anything about corrupting my computer with that garbage, and I have no idea how much it is going to take to get back to normal. The first problem, it killed my shortcut to Free Republic!. God only knows what else it did.

You’re talking about PUPs, Probably Unwanted Program(s).

Just be careful during the installation. Look at each screen carefully before clicking Next. You may want to unclick some default choices.

Ccleaner is not the only ‘free’ software doing this. Others are as well. It’s a way for them to make money.

I know, this is the second time I got burnt with Chrome, and one other time with McAffee from an Adobe update). But I was looking, I thought.

If we haven’t ‘updated’ in months is the program safe?

Probably. If you want to avoid running the program, just download the latest version and install it on top of the old one.

If you don't want to do that, and you can locate the program file "ccleaner.exe" in the CCleaner folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86), right click the ccleaner.exe file and left click Properties. The product version number of the program is listed under "Details." If that number is not 5.33.6162, you're OK.

I followed your advice and checked. I’m fine. Different number - turns out last time I updated was almost a year ago...

Thanks for the help TChad.
