I'm a bit older but when growing up we watched the Oscars every year. The show was over-long but enjoyable, and the movies nominated for Best Picture were ones we had actually heard of and may have seen. Today these shows are unwatchable.
My mother, who grew up in the 1930's and 40's, used to watch the Oscars religiously. She would even have a close friend or two over, and they would comment on the movies, the actors they liked, the clothes being worn, etc...
I do understand "Hollywood" of long ago was much more glamorous, was apolitical, and represented a standard set of values accepted by all Americans. None of those are true now

I am pushing 60. We used to watch the Oscars every year when I was a kid, but we only had two channels.
