The Autumnal Equinox is observed annually when the sun can be seen directly overhead along the equator, marking the end of summer and beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

The autumn equinox is one of two days when all points on Earth except the polar regions see the sun rise and set at due east and due west. With few exceptions, all latitudes see almost exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 of darkness.

Amazing, for all my extended education I never really understood that Equinox (there are 2, spring and fall)is when the sun passes the equator.

Which is turn led me to find out that Solstice (beginning of Summer and Winter) is when the sun is at its northern (southern) most point.

Makes me realize my continuing ignorance and that I can still learn. As I thought the beginning of Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer were just dates on the calender.

You may already know this, but the northern most point that the sun travels is the Tropic of Cancer, southern most point is the Tropic of Capricorn.

Just a bit more info for you:

During the equinox (a few hours before and after) you can balance a raw egg on it’s end and it will stay upright for weeks.

You cannot balance a raw egg on its end at other times.

No trick here, just natural ‘balance of nature’ stuff.

I balanced an egg on the kitchen counter yesterday afternoon.

It stayed upright until our new kitty knocked it over.
